Want to ask you all — what would you do if your boss at school suddenly turns cold like this?
I’m 38, a secondary teacher out of town in Phuket, been teaching almost 7 years. I love the job so much. I teach grades 10–11 and I like seeing kids start to think. But lately things feel weird with the principal. The person who used to say hi at 7:30 in the morning has gone distant, barely greets me. Seems like they avoid talking about work with me directly, pushing tasks to other homeroom teachers even though I’m the project lead.
This started a few months ago, around early April. We had an intensive end-of-term prep project. I proposed the plan, made the teaching schedule, rotated teachers, suggested names, and sorted the budget with the notebook seller down the lane (guy with glasses, takes about two weeks). Then one day the principal told me to cut the budget, even though most of it was already settled. When I went to discuss adjustments I just got a short “we’ll fix it later” and then nothing was followed up.
There was a day a parent came in about scores and caused a scene. I went in, explained, took responsibility. But when it escalated, the principal sent a small email to the team asking everyone to sign an evaluation form without clear reasons. In the evaluation notes, most of the remarks pointed to my management, even though I’d been trying my best. Super confusing.
Sometimes I’m assigned to supervise evening activities until past 10pm without prior notice, then called to present a summary in front of the staff like I’m the only one at fault, even though many people helped. I ask why, and the answers are usually short — “work stuff” — and then they change the subject, no further explanation.
I’ve started doubting myself, wondering if I said or did something that upset them, but I can’t think of anything major. Maybe some small thing I didn’t notice, but it makes me feel awful and exhausted. Feels so unfair at work.
Some days I think I’m overthinking, or maybe the principal’s stressed about other stuff and taking it out on me. Should I clear it up formally? It’s starting to affect my mood and teaching, and the kids are picking up the bad atmosphere too.
Typing on my phone so sorry if I miss something. I don’t have a direct boss — we’re all teachers, no external employer orders. I really want advice on what to do next. Should I ask for a one-on-one? Let it be and wait for them to return to normal? Or is there a way to communicate that won’t make things worse? I don’t want this to affect the students.
Anyone experienced this, please share. T_T lol
