Quick: borrowing a friend's login to post.
I'm 28, been working as a document officer at a small company in Nimmanhaemin, Chiang Mai for almost two years. I like the paperwork job, but lately I'm so confusedgg. The vibe at first was okay — teammates were sweet, snacks in front of the room, walls painted a light cream. I usually sip coffee from a small cup I bring from home around 09:10 before starting, but now it's not the same.
So it started when a boss transferred from the Bangkok branch about three months ago. He's a very strong character, loud, always saying he's on standby, finishing a meeting then sending more tasks on LINE. I'm okay if the work is clear, but the problem is his management style. Our whole team is Chiang Mai locals and we normally talk ideas in a circle, but when he comes in he likes to hand out tasks in pieces without asking opinions. If someone doesn't do it his way, he immediately changes it and throws the task to someone else right then — dead quiet.
Sometimes a task I've prepared for a week will be edited for the fifth time right before the end of the day. I get reviews, but sometimes the edits are just personal tastes — like he says to put a short summary here but he wants long, fancy wording, like he changes the whole tone without telling us. When I ask why, he just says "want it to look more pro" and that's it. I'm like... really? You're going to inspect it like that?
Some teammates adapt super fast, so they get more new tasks and praise from the boss often, which makes small cracks in team relationships. Like a friend I used to be close to suddenly talks super nicely to the boss but is shorter with me, sometimes reads my LINE and doesn't reply. They're small things but it feels unequal, or am I just overthinking T_T
Another thing is OT. Everyone knows it's busy at quarter-end, but the boss likes to tap the people he prefers to do things first, then tell everyone else to come help past 9pm. I get we have to help, but sometimes it's work the same person has always done and he doesn't ask if the person being moved has other pending tasks — just orders it suddenly, with a tone... honestly doing this often burns people out.
There are tasks outside daily work too. Sometimes the boss sends me to coordinate with senior clients in other provinces, which I'd normally be happy about — good learning — but he'll call one day before and tell me to prepare all documents and meet the client that evening at 17:30. At home there's stuff going on, LINE mixed with work, ugh so chaotic, until I end up borrowing papers from a friend to finish in time. I'm not complaining about hard work, it's the communication and chaotic management.
I tried talking politely to the boss that I'd like clear explanations before changes, but he answers "we can tell you later" or acts tired, so I feel like there's no real space to ask for anything. Should I be more patient... or am I being narrow-minded? Hmm, am I just too detail-oriented?
There's also this joke one teammate mentioned about having a monthly top-performer ranking — sounded fun, but when the boss announced a real name it got this dry smile I hadn't seen before. Another thing: company culture scores people for staying after 6pm in the office, even if the work doesn't need to be done there. So people with family duties or who don't want to stay long feel pressured. Some have to prep work on weekends when sudden orders come in. I find it strange, but if I speak up I'm afraid the answer will be "this is company culture." Right?
Feeling a bit confused, tired, and annoyed, but I still like the paperwork and the friends I do like. I don't want to be a complainer, but sometimes I wonder if I should tolerate more. Why is endurance something you have to keep accumulating while basic communication gets no respect? Should I ask more clearly, or start looking elsewhere? What do you all think? OP is veeeery confused.
P.S. If it's because I'm not friendly enough, teach me pls 5555
Confused by the new office culture in Chiang Mai — why is it like this?
