So something confusing happened at the faculty and I'm wondering what to do, everyone.
Short version first: I'm a 36-year-old PhD student. I do research and teach part-time at a nearby uni but I live in Hua Hin. I've been working on this project with one of the lab heads for about 3 years, collected data for around 45 full days, and I made all the slides and graphs myself (I was even up at 5:30 AM one Saturday finishing stuff — there were Post-it notes literally in the corner of my desk). I presented this at the departmental meeting last night at about 10:30 PM.
Yesterday in the research group meeting everyone had 5 minutes. I let the supervisor look at my slides beforehand, but when it was his turn to lead he said, “This work is from our team,” and then changed the slides I prepared, summarised everything in broad strokes like he was making the final call alone. He didn’t mention any of the details, techniques, or mistakes I encountered at all.
He even emphasised things I didn’t get wrong and said I didn’t prepare the data well enough, so the work looked incomplete, and then looked at me like... well, that look. I almost blacked out.
I was completely silent. I couldn’t cry in the meeting but inside I was freaking out.
Back in the office two colleagues said, “Looks like the supervisor kind of sabotaged the work a bit,” while another tried to comfort me, “It was just a meeting, you’ll fix it.” I didn’t know how to reply — if I spoke up in the meeting it would’ve been awkward, but if I stayed quiet it felt like watching him take credit and blame me. Am I overthinking?
I get that the supervisor can guide things, but the way he did it killed my momentum. I’m a student who still needs funding, time, and guidance from him — I’m scared that pushing too hard will cost me opportunities. But if I keep letting him do this, people might just think I’m bad at my work forever. Will they see me that way?
I’m thinking of talking to him after the meeting, casually (like a 10-minute, direct but polite chat), or sending an email summarising the work with the data files showing what I did, just to have evidence. But I’m afraid of sounding petty or making him angry so he blocks me from funding or future supervision. I can’t decide.
Has anyone gone through this? Share please so I know how to grow from it. It’s a lesson but it really hurts now T_T
Am I being too sensitive? Should I go talk to him lightly or send the email? Is there a polite but firm way to claim credit? haha
My supervisor took credit for my work in a meeting and made it look like my fault. What should I do?
