Chiang Rai launches pop-up film festival to bring cinema to rural communities and promote local content
Next weekend Chiang Rai Province will host a pop-up film festival across several subdistricts in Mueang Chiang Rai and nearby districts, focusing on independent films, local documentaries and works by emerging Thai and international directors. The festival aims to open cultural spaces so rural communities can access the arts, give local filmmakers a platform, and stimulate creative tourism in this major northern city.
The festival will feature outdoor screenings in community parks and public squares, showings in art cafés and small galleries, and programs in renovated local cinemas. The lineup was assembled from an open call plus special invitations from a network of independent filmmakers’ associations. Highlights include a documentary about community life on the highlands, short films shot by students in the province, and indie feature films addressing environmental issues and Chiang Rai’s urban changes.
Organizers — a group of local artists and creative-sector businesses — say the event is not competition-focused and will not emphasize formal awards. Instead it prioritizes creating space for exchange between audiences and creators. Activities include panel talks and workshops on low-budget film production, smartphone filmmaking techniques, scriptwriting, and distribution through streaming platforms, reflecting shifts in content consumption in the digital era. Programmers hope the festival will inspire and equip young people in the province who are interested in filmmaking by helping them build networks and practical skills.
The festival collaborates with the provincial tourism office and local small businesses such as organic restaurants, homestays and tour operators to design packages so out-of-town audiences and tourists can enjoy both the films and community activities—craft demonstrations, daytime mountain visits, and local food tastings. This approach aims to spread income into communities. At the same time, the festival will screen attendees and limit crowd density at screening sites to comply with ongoing public health precautions.
Organizers advise visitors to book accommodation and workshop slots in advance because some activities have limited capacity. The event is expected to attract locals, art students and creative-minded tourists seeking cultural experiences different from Chiang Rai’s mainstream attractions. Attendees can expect to meet real directors, see works that haven’t been screened elsewhere, and try filmmaking techniques in close-up workshops.
This type of place-based film festival reflects the broader growth of the creative economy in Chiang Rai, which not only livens the local entertainment scene but also creates new careers and income channels for communities beyond traditional tourism. A young local director said hosting the festival in community spaces gives overlooked folk stories a chance to reach broader audiences and hopes the event will be the start of a regional filmmaking production network.
The festival runs from Friday through Sunday. screening schedules and workshop programs will be published on the festival’s page and the Chiang Rai tourism office’s channels. Interested parties can follow the announcements for booking details and the program in advance to plan travel and accommodation alongside experiencing art in a different Chiang Rai atmosphere.
