Pattaya residents distressed by noise from foreign-owned gym, call for agencies to investigate community impact

Pattaya — A family in a residential area of Pattaya has called on local authorities to inspect a fitness gym and boxing camp owned by foreigners after ongoing noise from training sessions, music, and outdoor conversations has regularly disrupted residents’ nighttime rest.

The complainants say the disturbances have continued for months, with training noises sometimes so loud they startle people and make sleep impossible on some nights. There have been reports of the noise continuing until 3 a.m. on several occasions. When affected residents spoke with the business operators, they were told it was a private business matter and not something to be dealt with, increasing tensions between the operators and the community.

Noise from health and fitness establishments is not new in a mixed-use tourist city like Pattaya. Local law sets noise standards and operating hours for activities in residential areas, but enforcement depends on complaints from residents and inspections by the relevant officials. In this case, residents want the Pattaya City Municipality and the environmental public health authorities to measure noise levels, check permits and building standards, and review the measures in place to manage sound both inside and outside the building.

Local human rights advocates and community representatives warn that if the problem is not resolved, it will harm residents’ quality of life—especially children, the elderly, and patients who need rest—and could lead to conflicts between locals and business operators, many of whom are foreign investors. Experts recommend clear communication between the parties, such as negotiating solutions, setting community-friendly training hours, installing sound insulation, and establishing a fast and fair complaint system.

For tourists staying nearby, the situation could damage the city’s image if not properly handled. Other local businesses are concerned that noise could affect tourist satisfaction and reviews, which would hurt the overall business environment. The municipality, which has received complaints, said it will send officers to the site to measure noise levels and check permit documents next week.

Long-term solutions require cooperation from all parties: foreign business operators must comply with regulations and consider community well-being; residents should use official complaint channels; and local authorities need to increase inspections and provide guidance on sound management. If successful, Pattaya can maintain a balance between being a tourist city and a community where residents enjoy a good quality of life.
