Phuket welcomes 52% surge in Israeli tourists in July; visitor mix shifting

Phuket — The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Phuket office, reported growth in Israeli visitors to Phuket in July, rising 52.43% compared with the same period last year. Compared with 2019, before COVID-19, the increase is more than a thousand percent, a sign of tourism recovery and a change in the island’s tourist market structure.

The rise in Israeli arrivals has several causes: new or more convenient flight connections, Phuket’s popularity as a beach destination, and targeted marketing by tour operators aimed at Middle Eastern travelers. The easing of travel restrictions and a more relaxed international tourism atmosphere have also enabled more visitors from many countries to travel again.

The economic impact on the local economy is both positive and requires adaptation. Luxury hotels and villas have seen increased bookings, and large tour operators and restaurants benefit from spending by higher‑purchasing tourists. At the same time, small businesses may need to adjust services to meet different demands—such as menus that suit tastes, language support, and appropriate tourist information. The growth of this specific tourist segment has also encouraged development of new tour packages and extra services tailored to the target market.

However, the rapid recovery in visitor numbers is putting pressure on basic resources like clean water, traffic, waste management, and beach conservation. In popular areas with high tourist density, some residents and local businesses have expressed concern about long‑term effects on quality of life and the environment. Provincial public and private agencies are discussing sustainable development planning to balance economic growth with preservation of natural resources.

TAT’s Phuket office said it will cooperate with local sectors to promote quality tourism, not just visitor numbers. It will push Thai tourism operators to adapt services, increase language and service training, maintain safety standards, and promote environmentally friendly tourism so Phuket can accommodate foreign tourists sustainably and deliver long‑term benefits to local communities.
