Married 2 years. Before the wedding, I had no idea this was the arrangement.

My husband's salary is 45,000. Every month it goes entirely into his mother's account. She deducts a portion for her own expenses + the bills for the family house she lives in, then transfers the rest to my husband.

He set this up with his mother when he started working 8 years ago. She says, "I'm helping you save, so you don't waste it."

2 years into the marriage, when we want to buy anything big — fixing the car, replacing appliances — it has to go through her for approval. Sometimes she says, "Not necessary, wait a bit longer." And we wait.

I told my husband: we're adults, we should manage our own money. He went silent and said, "Mom would be hurt."

I'm starting to feel like I didn't just marry my husband — I married his mother too. She's the one who decides in our home. How do I change this without breaking the family?
