Community Music Festival on Koh Samui Draws Local Artists and Promotes Grassroots Economy

At the end of this month, a beach community on Koh Samui will hold a community music festival under the concept “Voices from the Island,” featuring more than 20 acts including local artists, indie singers, and traditional bands. The event will take place in a public area alongside a local goods market, food stalls serving regional cuisine, and cultural performances, offering island residents and tourists an intimate musical atmosphere unlike flashy large-scale festivals in the capital.

The volunteer head organizer said the main purpose of the festival is to provide a stage for local performers to showcase their work, expand sales channels for community products and food, and stimulate sustainable tourism while distributing income to small households. The event emphasizes local identity in its image — from poster design that reflects Koh Samui to wooden stages and recycled materials — and invites fishing and farming communities to sell their produce directly.

Small local businesses have shown interest and expect increased sales during the event. The food market will feature island-style sweets, local herbs, fresh seafood, and organic herbal drinks. There will also be short workshops, such as making shell jewelry, herbal tea tastings, and wearing traditional patterned clothing, which tourists can join without paying an entrance fee. Organizers have coordinated with local agencies to control visitor numbers and manage waste systematically.

Tourists who have visited Koh Samui commented that the appeal of events like this is the closeness to the community, providing a more authentic experience than commercially driven concerts. A guesthouse owner said some foreign guests seek activities that emphasize local culture and often extend their stay by one to two nights to attend the event or shop, suggesting that cultural tourism can genuinely boost community income.

Although the event is small-scale, organizers prioritize safety and environmental management. Emergency points are designated and shuttle van routes are planned to avoid traffic problems in the community, and guidelines have been set to reduce single-use plastics. The provincial governor has supported publicity efforts and urged businesses to follow public health measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

The festival’s challenge is balancing attracting tourists with preserving local ways of life. Organizers aim for gradual growth and adhere to the principle of “community as host,” rather than letting outside investors take control. They also plan to track how festival revenue is distributed to small operators to inform next year’s event design.
