Market Fire in Central Chiang Rai — Community Joins to Help; Tourists Safe, No Injuries
In the early morning of June 15, 2026, a fire broke out at the central market in Chiang Rai city, near commercial and residential areas. Vendors and residents hurriedly evacuated their goods. Tourists staying nearby were alerted and evacuated safely; there were no reports of injuries or fatalities. However, damage to property and stock has caused serious concern for local business owners.
Thick smoke and flames engulfed stalls in the market. More than 12 fire trucks from Chiang Rai Municipality, neighboring municipal units, and private rescue teams responded to control the situation. Officials took about three hours to bring the blaze under control. Investigators suspect an electrical short circuit at a food stall as the initial cause, but authorities will need to confirm the true cause after a formal investigation.
Vendors said the fire spread rapidly before dawn, leaving many unable to gather their goods in time. One seller reported severe losses of merchandise and raw materials, while operators on the opposite side of the market helped carry salvageable items out, limiting the damage and preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent commercial buildings. The community set up temporary shelter areas for those affected and coordinated with government agencies to arrange assistance.
The impact of the incident extends beyond market vendors and also affects Chiang Rai’s tourism image in the short term, because the market is a popular stop for local food and handicrafts. On the morning of the fire there were Thai and foreign tourists staying in the commercial area, but all were evacuated quickly and assisted by tour guides and accommodation owners, resulting in no injuries. Several visitors, however, had to cancel planned souvenir shopping and market tours temporarily.
Local authorities said they will coordinate with the provincial commerce and public health offices to assess damage and implement urgent support measures, including initial financial aid, temporary retail space, and financial counseling for business owners. They have also ordered inspections of electrical systems and safety standards in other provincial markets to prevent recurrence. Meanwhile, the community council and local business associations are raising funds to help vendors who have lost income.
Residents and business owners commented that the market’s warning systems and fire evacuation drills were not strong enough. Many called on responsible agencies to establish safety standards and to provide continuous fire-prevention training for vendors. A representative of the Chiang Rai Tourism Association suggested posting evacuation plans and assembly points for tourists and managing traffic around the area to prevent blockage of escape routes.
Tourists visiting Chiang Rai expressed concern and offered moral support to affected businesses, saying they would return once the situation improves. One operator thanked the community and officials for their assistance and expressed hope that recovery efforts would proceed quickly so the market can regain its lively atmosphere and the trust of both tourists and Chiang Rai residents.
