Israeli Tourists Surge 52% in July — Phuket Prepares for Rising Demand

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Phuket office, reported that arrivals from Israel in July 2026 increased by 52.43% compared with the same period last year and rose by as much as 1,204.68% compared with July 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. These figures were presented at a Phuket provincial meeting on August 27 to discuss positive impacts and tourism management strategies.

The significant increase in Israeli visitors reflects a recovery in the international market and targeted marketing efforts in Phuket. Hoteliers, resorts and service providers reported higher occupancy rates and bookings, particularly in mid- to up-market accommodations. The recovery of international flights and expansion of routes by various airlines have also been key factors linking Phuket more closely to Middle Eastern and Eastern European markets.

However, the rise in tourist numbers brings management challenges for resources, including traffic, water use, waste management and staffing in the tourism industry. Some local operators said they are facing labor shortages during the high season and must accelerate training of new staff to maintain service standards. Local authorities are stressing planning for utilities and environmental management to avoid long-term negative impacts on tourism.

Beyond operational management, cultural and language readiness is a priority for operators, since Israeli tourists often have specific travel activities and expectations—such as food and services suited to their lifestyle. Many hotels have begun offering special menus and services and organizing tours tailored to this market to create memorable experiences and encourage repeat visits.

On destination management, TAT Phuket and related agencies are promoting tourism dispersion away from main beaches to community sites, nearby islands and experiential activities to spread income to communities and reduce pressure on the most famous attractions. Promoting cultural and nature-based tourism is also seen as a key approach to building sustainability in the tourism sector.

For medium- and long-term measures, the governor and relevant agencies recommend coordination between public and private sectors to plan for peak-season arrivals, covering public transport, waste management, security and staff training. They also propose deeper data analysis of tourist behavior to design products and services that meet demand. If well managed, the rise in Israeli tourists in July is expected to be an important opportunity to restore the local economy and elevate Phuket toward a sustainable world-class tourism destination.
