Foreign Tourists Fined After Spray-Painting School Fence in Chiang Mai, Damaging Image and Worrying Community
On July 12, 2026, two foreign tourists were detained and fined for using spray paint on the fence of a school and on public property in downtown Chiang Mai. The incident was reported on the Chiang Mai Provincial Police Facebook page after a good Samaritan alerted authorities upon witnessing the wrongdoing.
Police said the incident occurred at a school in the Chiang Mai municipality in the afternoon. Nearby community members saw two people with spray cans painting patterns and words on the school fence and on public walls, and they immediately notified police. Officers who arrived at the scene found cans of spray paint and completed graffiti. The two admitted they were foreign tourists visiting the area and confessed to the act.
Authorities pressed charges under local law, accusing the pair of damaging or defacing public property and disturbing the community’s peace. They were issued fines under the law and ordered to compensate the school and other affected agencies for damages. Police also coordinated with the tourists’ embassy to inform them of the charges and the related legal procedures.
The incident alarmed parents, teachers and residents, especially since the site was a place for children and young people. Locals said the area’s image was harmed, feelings of insecurity increased, and they were concerned some tourists do not appreciate the importance of protecting public property. A parent using the pseudonym Somying said, “We do not want educational institutions to be vandalized, whether by carelessness or intentionally,” and called for stricter tourism controls.
Attractions and the Chiang Mai municipality have advised and adopted measures to prevent similar incidents, such as installing CCTV at key points, increasing cooperation between communities and police to monitor suspicious behavior, and posting public notices about rules. They are also promoting traveler awareness through social media and the tourism office to help visitors understand local culture and regulations.
From a tourism perspective, relevant ministries and agencies said that small incidents like spray-painting can affect Chiang Mai’s tourism image. If such acts occur frequently, they could harm the reputation of a province that is a major destination for domestic and international visitors. Tourism businesses recommended providing training and handing out guideline materials to travelers, especially backpackers and young people who often travel independently.
The incident also reflects broader issues in maintaining public spaces in popular tourist cities. Urban management experts advise coordinated action among government, private sector and communities to create proactive prevention measures and develop rapid, effective responses to rule violations by tourists. Such steps are needed to preserve the area’s image and residents’ quality of life, and to foster a shared understanding of respecting public property and local culture.
