Chiang Mai Indigenous Sound Festival Returns with Energy, Featuring Lanna and International Artists

The 12th Chiang Mai Folk Music and Culture Festival opened this past weekend at the city’s central event square, bringing together local artists from the Lanna region, contemporary performers, and international troupes for lively presentations. Held over three days, the program included traditional music performances such as northern folk songs and local vocal styles, demonstrations of indigenous instruments like the khlui, so (Thai fiddle) and hi-lao (clay pot drum), and hybrid works combining traditional music with modern genres.

This year’s festival highlighted young artists from Chiang Mai and neighboring provinces remixing folk songs with pop and electronic styles, producing new sounds that attracted both locals and foreign visitors. There was also a workshop zone demonstrating how to make traditional instruments, folk singing workshops, and an exhibition area narrating the history of Lanna music. Attendees had opportunities to learn how local culture can be interpreted from contemporary perspectives.

Organizers said the event aims to promote cultural preservation by creating connections between young people, communities, and tourists. The festival received support from provincial tourism agencies and private-sector partners. Amid efforts to revive the local economy after a slowdown caused by various factors, nearby restaurant and accommodation operators reported noticeably higher booking rates during the festival, helping to boost community income.

Most international visitors praised the atmosphere and the program’s variety, saying that hearing traditional music fused with modern elements made it easier to understand and feel connected to the local culture. Many Chiang Mai residents viewed the platform as an important opportunity for local artists to showcase their work and build reputations, potentially leading to continued artistic and economic opportunities.

However, conservation groups raised concerns about adapting folk music to modern styles, arguing that traditional elements should be preserved in balance so that modifications do not diminish the cultural meaning or significance. Organizers responded by arranging forums and knowledge-sharing sessions that brought together cultural heritage experts and artists to find common ground on conservation and sustainable presentation.

Overall, this year’s festival was a success both artistically and economically, with estimates that tourist and attendee spending helped support small local businesses while giving the community a chance to present its culture to a wider public. Organizers said they will collect feedback and participation data to improve future editions so the event remains aligned with goals of cultural preservation and fostering young creative talent, ensuring the festival continues as an important cultural destination in Chiang Mai.
