Chiang Rai Prepares Measures for Monsoon Rains; Experts Urge Forest Restoration and Warn Tourists

Chiang Rai province is stepping up measures to cope with the monsoon season after the Department of Water Resources issued warnings for several high-risk areas in the North, including red alerts for eight villages in Chiang Rai. The situation underscores the urgent need to prevent and reduce risks from flash floods and landslides in mountainous and valley areas.

Local administrative authorities have convened meetings with relevant agencies at district, municipal and subdistrict administrative organization levels to assess risk points and prepare evacuations. The provincial governor has ordered installation of water-level monitoring equipment in main rivers and tributaries and increased patrols in communities near waterways. Emergency medical teams and nurses at health service units have been instructed to prepare emergency medicines and medical supplies to support potential victims.

An environmental academic from the local university said sustainable proactive prevention requires restoring highland ecosystems, especially reforestation and community forest management to increase the land’s water absorption capacity. He also recommended engineering measures such as building retaining walls, check dams and reinforcing village embankments to slow runoff and reduce flood impact on lowland areas. These policies will require budgets from both provincial and central levels and cooperation from local residents.

On tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Chiang Rai office, issued guidance for travelers planning trips during heavy rains: follow announcements from local authorities, avoid mountain routes with known risks, and check with accommodations about emergency plans or evacuation services. Many hotels and resorts have prepared customer procedures such as designated evacuation routes, assembly points for emergencies, and lists of essential items for evacuation to assist guests. Travelers coming for outdoor adventure activities like trail running or rafting should cancel activities when high-level warnings are issued.

Short-term impacts on the local economy are possible, particularly for tourism and agriculture. Heavy rains and flooding can disrupt travel, lead to cancellations, and damage some crops. The province is urging farmers to prepare protective measures, such as raising crop beds, removing water obstructions, and harvesting market-ready produce in advance to reduce losses.

In the long term, local officials agree on the need for greater investment in climate-resilient infrastructure, such as improving drainage systems to handle increased rainfall, building roads and bridges that withstand strong water flows, and developing an early warning system that links meteorological stations and local sensors in real time to deliver fast, accurate information to residents.

Chiang Rai authorities ask residents and business operators to follow official announcements and immediately report signs of ground movement, unusual water pooling, or cracks in soil and buildings.
