Samui police probe construction crane fall that killed worker at resort site
Ko Samui — At about 09:30 this morning (5 Aug 2026), officers from Mueang Surat Thani Police Station (the unit responsible for cases on Ko Samui), rescue teams, and the island’s public health officials inspected a construction site at a mid‑size resort near one of the island’s well‑known beaches. They were responding to reports that a construction worker had fallen from a crane, sustaining severe injuries and later dying at the scene.
On arrival, officials found the body of a Thai man, about 42 years old, who was a regular employee of a local contracting firm. The body had blunt‑force wounds and there was blood on the ground. Safety officers and the site engineer made a preliminary check of the crane and found slings and a hook still attached to the construction materials, but a detailed forensic inspection by specialist engineers and provincial labour safety officials is required.
A witness working nearby said the crane was lifting building materials to the upper floors when it suddenly swayed. A worker standing close by lost his balance and tried to move away but was struck by falling material and plunged from height. Colleagues rushed him to the island hospital, but doctors confirmed he had died from severe injuries before arrival. Rescue teams arranged for the body to be transferred to hospital for formal examination and autopsy.
Surat Thani provincial labour officers visited the site to review the worker registration and safety documentation of the contractor. They found the deceased was a permanent employee with a contract, but that checks on the machinery’s safety systems and training in fall‑protection equipment were still pending. The labour office said it will verify compliance with occupational safety standards, relevant labour laws and regulations, the crane operator’s certification, and machine maintenance records.
The incident has alarmed the local community and construction workers on Ko Samui. Many are calling for stricter safety measures, noting that numerous resort and tourism projects are underway on the island and that the workforce often moves between the mainland and nearby islands, which complicates training and enforcement of work standards.
Nearby hoteliers and restaurant owners said tourism has not been directly affected so far, but the accident may raise concerns about worker safety and the island’s resort development image. If confidence cannot be restored, some investors and tourists may question construction and management standards. Police said they will determine the cause of the accident after autopsy and technical inspections are complete, and will press criminal charges if negligence or other offenses are found.
The case underscores the need to strengthen construction safety oversight on Ko Samui — legally, operationally, and through worker training — to protect lives, local communities, and the island’s reputation as an international tourist destination. This investigation will test the ability of government agencies, businesses, and the community to work together to prevent future tragedies.
