Samui residents alarmed after small boat blown up in bay following discovery of suspicious object; authorities rush to investigate

In the early morning of August 6, 2016, fishermen and resort operators along the bay in Mae Nam subdistrict, Ko Samui district, Surat Thani province were shocked after a suspicious object was found floating in the sea near the coral reef along the coast. Naval officers and the 2nd Army Region mobilized to inspect the area to prevent any malicious incident and evacuated nearby tourists before confirming what type of explosive device it was.

Rear Admiral Sanya Srisuwan, commander of the Southern Sea Peacekeeping Unit, said that after images and clips of the suspicious object circulated on social media, the unit immediately dispatched an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to the site to identify its basic characteristics and assess the risk. The team initially found a cylindrical object about 1 meter long floating near a small rocky islet called Koh Sok, roughly 700 meters from the shore. The EOD team used metal detectors and electromagnetic sensors to check for damage and markings on the object.

After several hours of careful inspection, the EOD team said a controlled detonation at sea was necessary for the safety of the community and tourists. Before the detonation, authorities announced a maritime exclusion zone with a 1-kilometer radius and coordinated with the regional disaster prevention command to evacuate fishing boats, hotel staff, and tourists from the area temporarily. The incident disrupted tourist boat operations that morning for nearly six hours.

Local residents and tourism operators said panic spread immediately, especially in communities whose economies rely heavily on tourism. Local fisherman Somchai said that they usually go out fishing early in the morning, but today had to cancel due to safety concerns; the navigation restrictions directly affected their income. Operators of snorkeling boats and fast ferries had to revise schedules and notify customers of delays.

Local administration authorities together with the Ko Samui police quickly convened meetings with relevant agencies to coordinate information and set short- and long-term measures, including detailed shoreline inspections, increased maritime patrols, and public communications to provide accurate information to residents and tourists to reduce alarm. The news also led some coastal hotels to see a temporary drop in bookings, and the Ko Samui Tourism Operators Association proposed more frequent joint coastal safety inspections with the navy.

Environmental and tourism experts warned that handling suspicious objects at sea must take into account impacts on coral reefs and marine ecosystems. If a controlled detonation produces shock waves or debris falling into the sea, it could damage marine habitats, so marine conservation teams should be brought in to assess impacts after the incident. Meanwhile, the public and tourists were urged to follow official updates closely and avoid sharing unverified information to prevent unnecessary panic.

This incident of a suspicious floating object off Ko Samui highlighted lessons about preparedness for maritime emergencies, including training fishermen to monitor for hazards, coordination among tourism operators and coastal security units, and planning for marine resource restoration after incidents, so that Ko Samui remains a safe destination for both residents and visitors in the long term.
