Northeastern Folk Artists Join Forces to Stage Music and Food Festival Highlighting Local Culture to Attract Tourists
Groups of folk artists and local entrepreneurs in Nakhon Ratchasima and Khon Kaen provinces have teamed up to organize a folk music festival that combines traditional performances of pong lang and mor lam with contemporary shows alongside a local food fair to revive the tourism economy after the impacts of the pandemic and economic downturn. Scheduled for late rainy season to early cool season, the festival aims to attract domestic and international visitors interested in Isan culture, while providing a platform for local artists to perform and earn income directly.
The organizers’ concept stems from the belief that local life and performing arts are cultural resources with tourism value. They say the event will emphasize the authenticity of Isan arts and culture while presenting it in ways that appeal to younger tastes — for example using contemporary staging, redesigned costumes, blending electronic music with the sound of the pong lang, and inviting local chefs to prepare signature dishes such as som tam, larb, nam tok, and khao jee for attendees to sample.
For folk artists, the festival is a golden opportunity to showcase work that may not get attention in mainstream media. Performers say they feel more recognized and have opportunities to earn income from their shows. At the same time, workshops will teach how to play traditional instruments and demonstrate local crafts such as silk and cotton weaving and community ceramics, helping to add economic value and pass knowledge on to younger generations.
The effects on local communities are expected to be visible both economically and socially. Tourism revenue will flow to small businesses such as guesthouses, restaurants, transport providers, and market stalls. The festival site will open a community market area for products like Isan silk, carvings, and indigenous goods. Beyond income, the festival will build pride in the community’s cultural heritage, encouraging younger people to take an interest in learning and preserving folk arts.
As a tourism product, the festival is positioned as part of a cultural-tourism package for the Isan region, alongside natural attractions such as national parks, cliffs, and waterways. Foreign visitors who seek cultural experiences will have the opportunity to engage closely with local ways of life. Tourism operators and communities are preparing measures to accommodate visitors, covering lodging, transportation, and translation services to ensure a professional and safe experience.
Organizers and local authorities stress that staging the festival must consider environmental protection and community sustainability. Waste management, limiting plastic use, and measures to prevent excessive noise are key priorities. Ensuring fair benefits for artists and local communities, and involving residents from planning through execution, will make the festival not only an entertainment event but also a driver of sustainable community economic development in Isan over the long term.
