"Colors of Flora" at Somdet Ya Park Draws Visitors to Rare Plants and Cultural Exhibits

BANGKOK — The plant exhibition “Colors of Flora” at the Queen Sirikit Park opened on August 8, celebrating and promoting the botanical heritage of the royal family. The event features displays of rare plants, educational booths on plant conservation, and cultural exhibits that blend traditional Thai floral arrangement with international techniques. It has attracted families, students, and both domestic and international tourists.

A highlight of the event is a showcase of species under the royal conservation program, including rare plants from across the ASEAN region. The exhibition also presents a large Diolinosaurus model as part of a hands-on learning display for children, which encourages parents to bring kids to learn about biology and natural history. In addition, there are flower-arranging workshops, training on urban gardening, and booths introducing the household use of medicinal plants.

Organizers say the goal is not only to entertain but to serve as a knowledge hub and to encourage community participation. Local communities were invited to sell plant-based products and handicrafts, providing supplementary income for urban farmers and small entrepreneurs. Activities also include traditional music performances and demonstrations of contemporary Thai arts, creating a warm, culturally diverse atmosphere.

For tourists, the event has become one of Bangkok’s appealing destinations, especially for those visiting during the summer or seeking green space in the city. The Bangkok Tourism Office encourages visitors to combine their visit with nearby local markets and restaurants. The park is easily accessible by public transport and offers designated parking. Another feature is limited entry at certain times to reduce crowding and preserve the visitor experience.

The economic impact on nearby areas is already visible: restaurants, cafes, and accommodations close to the park have seen higher booking rates. Local businesses report that the exhibition has stimulated spending and generated temporary jobs for residents. It also provides a platform for urban-agriculture startups and green businesses to present new ideas that could be developed into commercial products.

From an environmental expert’s perspective, events like this are valuable for public education and promoting sustainability, but attention must be paid to resource management and ecological impacts. Excessive commercial activity could put pressure on green spaces. Organizers say they will monitor environmental impacts and implement strict waste-reduction measures. “Colors of Flora” runs through August 13, with advance-ticketed entry and special weekend activities. Those interested can check the park’s and co-organizers’ websites for event schedules and reservations.
