Fire Breaks Out at Restaurant in Downtown Chiang Mai; Heavy Damage but No Serious Injuries

Shortly after midnight on August 8, 2026, firefighters from the Chiang Mai City Municipality were alerted to a blaze at a medium-sized restaurant in the central commercial district of Chiang Mai. The flames spread quickly and extended to the adjacent building, causing extensive damage to the upper floors of both shop-houses.

The incident occurred on a busy commercial road near a Big C branch. The restaurant owner told reporters the fire began at about 11:10 p.m. while staff were cleaning after closing. An employee smelled smoke and saw flames in the kitchen, and attempted to use a fire extinguisher, but the blaze spread rapidly due to flammable materials and an old ventilation system. The fire quickly reached the second floor and the roof.

More than ten firefighting teams from the municipal force and related emergency agencies responded and took about two hours to bring the fire under control. Occupants of the building and nearby shops were evacuated to safety. First aid was provided to a few people who suffered minor smoke inhalation, but there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries. Both shop-houses sustained heavy damage, and the kitchen and cooking equipment were destroyed and rendered unusable.

The Chiang Mai Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, together with the Chiang Mai City Municipality, set up a temporary coordination center to assist the shop owner and others affected. Investigators said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but preliminary inquiries suggest possible electrical problems in the kitchen or high-heat cooking activities. Wire samples and debris will be sent to a laboratory for further examination to determine the cause.

The Chiang Mai governor ordered relevant agencies to provide temporary aid to affected businesses, including immediate financial assistance for affected families and arranging temporary spaces for employees who must miss work. He also urged restaurant operators within the municipality to strictly inspect electrical systems and kitchen ventilation to reduce the risk of repeat fires.

The incident highlights safety risks in older commercial buildings in downtown Chiang Mai, especially restaurants that regularly use open flames and gas. Nearby residences and shops were affected both materially and emotionally, underscoring the need for local authorities to step up preventive measures and routine inspections so residents, tourists, and business owners can have confidence in the city’s safety—particularly while Chiang Mai remains a popular destination for domestic and international visitors.
