Chiang Mai readies plan to strengthen cybersecurity after more Thai account data appears on dark web

After disclosures that identity data linked to roughly 60 million Thais was leaked and surfaced on the dark web, Chiang Mai’s IT agencies and the provincial office held urgent talks to step up cybersecurity measures in both public and private sectors, especially local agencies that provide services to the public and hold large amounts of personal data.

A workshop held on 9 August 2026 included representatives from the provincial administration office, Chiang Mai Municipality, the provincial public health office, and local IT operators. The meeting emphasized enforcing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for critical systems, training staff on cyber threat awareness, and scanning databases for vulnerabilities. Large-scale data leaks like this risk being used for fraud and identity impersonation, making people easier targets.

The deputy governor of Chiang Mai said the province will survey the information systems of all affiliated agencies within 30 days to assess risk levels, and will expedite measures to require MFA for any systems holding citizens’ personal data. At the same time, the province has coordinated with the Department of Provincial Administration and security agencies to prepare response guidelines for data breaches, including advising the public on self-protection such as changing passwords, enabling two-step verification, and watching for phishing messages or scam calls.

Local businesses, especially in tourism, have been affected by data security concerns. A hotelier in Mueang Chiang Mai district said the hotel has revised its customer data retention policy to minimize unnecessary collection and upgraded backup systems to prevent data loss or unauthorized access. The hotel also advised international visitors to check whether service providers have data protection measures in place before handing over personal information.

From the public perspective, consumer networks and volunteer groups in Chiang Mai have organized activities to raise cybersecurity awareness among residents, such as short workshops on creating secure passwords, recognizing phishing, and using authentication apps. They have also set up an online hotline to advise people who suspect they may be victims of the breach.

The large-scale data leak is a warning for both government and private agencies in Chiang Mai to prepare for increasingly complex cyber threats. Proactive measures — including mandatory MFA, staff training, and improved backup systems — will be key to preventing repeated incidents and restoring confidence among residents and tourists in a popular destination like Chiang Mai.
