Midnight Fire Destroys Over 30 Stalls at Chiang Rai Community Market, Vendors Temporarily Unemployed

Last night (9 Aug 2016) at about 01:20, a fire broke out at a community fresh market in downtown Chiang Rai, engulfing and destroying more than 30 vendor stalls. Chiang Rai municipal firefighters and local rescue teams rushed to extinguish the blaze; it took about two hours to bring the situation under control. There were no fatalities, but four people suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation. Many vendors lost their goods and inventory that had been prepared for sale the next morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chiang Rai City Police Station and fire authorities. Nearby witnesses reported hearing a small explosion before seeing flames erupt from a stall selling electrical appliances and power accessories. That area allowed the fire to spread quickly because of highly flammable materials and tangled electrical wiring. Rescuers noted the market had no automatic fire suppression system and some wiring was damaged, which caused the blaze to spread faster than it otherwise might have.

The incident affected the community and vendors rapidly. For many vendors who rely on their small market stalls as their primary income, the losses include inventory, operating capital, and important documents. Several said they could lose income for at least a week to a month if they do not receive immediate help. Some families also carry debt from purchasing stock for recent local festival sales, worsening their financial strain. In addition, concerns about market safety have led some shoppers to avoid the area temporarily, further reducing vendors’ income.

Chiang Rai Municipality dispatched officials from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the social development team, and finance staff to the site the morning of the incident to conduct an initial damage survey. The municipality announced urgent measures including: opening donation points for essential goods; providing emergency financial assistance to affected vendors; issuing temporary permits to allow some vendors to sell in public spaces; and coordinating with insurance offices to fast-track damage assessments for insured stalls. Officials noted, however, that many vendors lack business insurance and therefore need other forms of support such as grants and short-term reconstruction loans.

Beyond relief measures, the municipality ordered inspections of electrical systems across local markets and prepared an initial budget to upgrade wiring, install fire extinguishers and alarm equipment, and provide vendor training on electrical safety and proper storage of flammable items. The mayor of Chiang Rai said the incident is a warning that market safety standards across the city must be upgraded urgently to prevent future occurrences and protect vendors’ livelihoods and public safety.
