Kok River Restoration Project in Chiang Rai Reduces Water Pollution, Boosts Nature-Based Tourism

The Chiang Rai Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment, together with the municipality and a local environmental foundation, has launched a project to restore the Kok River through Chiang Rai city to address deteriorating water quality caused by community wastewater and increased tourism activities. The two-year project focuses on installing community-scale wastewater treatment systems, improving riverside landscapes, and creating natural bank protections using primarily native plants to restore ecosystems and increase nature-based tourism opportunities.

The Kok River’s water quality has long suffered from multiple sources: wastewater from households and businesses in the urban area, runoff from nearby agricultural land, and waste from entertainment tourism activities that ends up in the river. These problems have reduced local aquatic life and produced unpleasant odors during certain seasons. The pilot project targets an approximately 5-kilometer stretch of densely populated riverside to build small treatment stations using natural technologies such as settling ponds and constructed wetlands, which are energy-efficient and well-suited to the community context.

Beyond water treatment, the project emphasizes community participation by offering workshops on wastewater management, reducing household chemical use, and waste management. Vocational training will be provided for women’s groups and youth to take part in related activities, such as making fabric bags from recycled materials to sell to visitors, and conservation tourism activities like boat tours of the river ecosystem once water quality improves. Project staff stress that community cooperation is essential: if locals see health, environmental, and income benefits, they are more motivated to protect the water resources.

Economic impacts from the project are expected to appear within 1–2 years. As water quality improves and riverside landscapes are restored, opportunities for additional nature-based tourism will open up—such as nature trails, riverfront lifestyle viewing points, restaurants using local ingredients, and conservation-oriented canoe tours—providing supplementary income for the community. At the same time, reduced odors and vector insects will improve the quality of life for riverside residents, making the city more livable for both locals and visitors.

The project is also intended as a model that can be scaled to other tributaries in Chiang Rai and to the northern economic corridor. Environmental experts from the local university will monitor and evaluate changes in water quality and biodiversity periodically and share lessons learned so other local administrative organizations can adapt them. Scaling up will require funding support from central government agencies and the private sector.

For residents and businesses in the municipal area, proactive reductions in wastewater discharge and improved waste management are necessary. If all parties cooperate, the initiative will not only solve environmental problems but also create new sustainable economic opportunities for Chiang Rai. Local authorities believe restoring the Kok River will help restore Chiang Rai’s image as a major nature-based tourism city in the North and provide a healthier environment for future generations.
