Chiang Rai to strengthen transport measures to accommodate tourists during year-end festivals

Chiang Rai province is speeding up plans to bolster transport and safety measures to handle an influx of tourists during the year-end festival season. Local leaders have met with public transport agencies, highway police and passenger transport operators to set measures aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connections between popular attractions such as Doi Tung, Doi Ang Khang and Chiang Rai town.

Proposed measures include establishing designated parking areas for destination tourists, increasing the number of main-line bus trips during peak periods, and promoting carpooling between villages that serve as tour pick-up and drop-off points. Emphasis was also placed on road safety measures, such as vehicle readiness checkpoints, safe-driving campaigns and placing warning signs on narrow, dangerous curves. The goal is to reduce accidents that tend to rise when traffic volumes increase during the tourist season.

Short-term infrastructure improvements expected to be implemented in time for the festivals include repairing damaged sections of road surfaces, installing multilingual directional signs to assist foreign visitors, and expanding tourist information centers in key districts to provide maps, rest-stop locations and emergency health services. These service points will coordinate with community hospitals to ensure timely assistance for injured or emergency patients.

Beyond transport, provincial authorities are also prioritizing medical service capacity and waste management in tourist areas. Plans include adding mobile medical rapid-response units in remote areas and partnering with environmental agencies and community organizations on a “Reduce Tourism Waste” campaign to encourage tourists and operators to cut single-use plastics, set up temporary waste-sorting points and promote biodegradable materials.

The measures are important to local communities that rely mainly on tourism income; good management will help enhance economic sustainability and preserve environmental quality. Many communities in the province have voiced support for the approach, which aims both to facilitate visitors and protect local livelihoods, while also calling for clarity on enforcement measures — for example, controls on noise and the number of buses in narrow areas to lessen negative impacts on neighborhoods.

The provincial governor said progress-monitoring meetings will be held regularly and that civil society and tourism operators will be invited to participate so festival management can be smooth and sustainable. The province expects the complete operational plan to be finalized and announced to the public within a month so residents and operators can prepare.
