Police investigate Israeli holding Thai citizenship in Phuket after documents questioned

On August 11, 2016, the Interior Ministry opened an inquiry into how an Israeli national living in Phuket obtained Thai citizenship, and into companies reported to be linked to him, after local media raised doubts about the legality of the documents and the naturalization process.

A Phuket Times report on August 9 said the Israeli man had been granted Thai citizenship and a household registration book, prompting questions from residents and local agencies about the approval procedures. The Interior Ministry said it had received related information and documents and ordered relevant agencies to examine the citizenship application records, the filing process, criminal background checks, proof of genuine residence, and business permits.

The probe also covers companies allegedly connected to the person. Officials said that if fraud or forged documents were found in obtaining the citizenship, legal action would follow immediately, including revocation of citizenship and criminal prosecution under applicable measures. Local agencies in Phuket have coordinated information with the Immigration Office, the Department of Provincial Administration’s civil registration office, and the provincial prosecutor’s office.

The case has caused concern in the local community, especially among business owners and residents who questioned whether permits allowing foreigners to hold property or obtain Thai citizenship are being handled transparently. Some local community representatives called on responsible agencies to promptly explain publicly the criteria and procedures for granting citizenship, to restore confidence and address allegations that could harm Phuket’s image as a major tourist destination.

As for tourism impacts, there is no immediate sign this case will directly affect visitor numbers in the short term, since it relates to internal public administration. However, if investigations reveal corruption or legal loopholes were exploited to gain citizenship, it could undermine confidence among foreign investors and local communities, particularly concerning property ownership and business operations in Phuket.

Reporters contacted the Phuket provincial office and local police. Officials said the probe is still in the information-gathering stage and agencies are coordinating to establish the facts. They will hold a public briefing when conclusions are reached. Authorities asked residents and businesses to wait for the official explanation and to refrain from spreading unverified information to avoid misunderstandings or panic.

Legally and administratively, Thailand’s naturalization process is complex and includes criminal background checks, proof of genuine residence, financial standing, and compliance with local laws. This investigation will test the government agencies’ vetting systems and administrative transparency. If shortcomings are found, it could be an opportunity to reform or improve procedures to reduce vulnerabilities and prevent future use of fraudulent documents.

Members of the public with information about the case have been asked to submit evidence or report details to relevant agencies to assist the inquiry. The responsible bodies reiterated they will act fairly and lawfully, protecting the rights of those investigated while prosecuting offenders if violations are proven.
