Phuket Police Rush to Trace Source After Illegal Guns Found in Coastal Community

On August 10, 2016, Phuket police, together with local administration officials, carried out searches in a western coastal community of the province after residents reported finding firearms and ammunition hidden in several rental houses. The operation led to the seizure of a number of illegal firearms and some documents that are being examined as part of the case against those involved.

The superintendent of the Phuket police station said the sweep aimed to reduce the risk of crime in the coastal neighborhood, an area that contains residences, small tourist spots, and commercial businesses serving visitors. Officers split into teams to search rental homes, condominiums, and several suspicious shops. Initial searches turned up shotguns, various types of handguns, and a quantity of ammunition. The items were seized for fingerprint and DNA checks.

The seizure is significant for community and tourist safety because Phuket’s population and economy are driven by tourism and include locals, foreigners, and migrant workers. The presence of hidden illegal weapons in a residential area raises the risk that they could be used in violent incidents or cause public alarm. Phuket police therefore place high priority on tracing the origins of these firearms to prevent recurrence.

Local residents said they felt relieved by the searches but worried that the problem may reflect deeper issues, such as the arrival of new groups of residents and lax screening of rental properties. “We want rental management and tenant screening to be carried out continuously for the safety of the community,” one resident said.

Authorities said the investigation will not stop with the seizures but will expand to examine smuggling routes, online trade contacts, and intermediary networks that might distribute weapons to other parts of the country. They are also coordinating with relevant agencies to obtain rental registration records and past tenant histories to find leads.

There could be an impact on tourism if news of the gun seizures spreads widely, so local tourism officials are working with police to provide transparent information and quickly reassure businesses and visitors, particularly as foreign tourist numbers are recovering. Maintaining security in residential and tourist areas will help reduce risk and protect the island’s image.

Meanwhile, the municipality and social agencies are preparing public information campaigns to educate residents on reporting tips and how to respond if they encounter suspicious items, and to support background-check programs for tenants in cooperation with landlords to limit opportunities for weapons to be brought into communities. These proactive measures are expected to help curb the spread of the problem and provide long-term reassurance to both Phuket residents and visitors.
