Israeli Ambassador Visits Surat Thani to Bolster Tourism and Security Cooperation, Support Israeli Community on Koh Samui

On August 13, 2026, Alona Fisher-Kamm, Israel’s ambassador to Thailand, visited Surat Thani province and reaffirmed cooperation with local authorities on tourism, business and public safety to look after the growing Israeli community in the area, including on Koh Samui. A statement from the embassy said tourism exchanges and tourist protection are among the key issues both sides prioritize.

The visit reflects the expansion of the Israeli community in southern Thailand, especially tourists and business owners who have chosen Koh Samui as a long-term stay or a location for tourism investment. Thai representatives from provincial tourism agencies and local administrative organizations met to exchange information on accommodating tourists, promoting cultural activities, and measures to prevent crime and respond to maritime emergencies that could affect tourist safety.

The basis of the cooperation is a mutual interest in restoring and developing the local economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, which hit the tourism sector hard. Koh Samui, as a community heavily dependent on tourism, welcomes marketing support and training for tourism personnel from international partners. A clear international tourism network helps attract higher-quality visitors and extend the tourist season beyond peak periods.

In practice, the provincial tourism office and the Koh Samui tourism business association plan to work with the Israeli embassy on promotional activities, as well as language and basic cultural training for operators and hotel staff so they can better communicate with and serve Israeli visitors. There are also proposals to improve coastal safety measures and emergency assistance for tourists, coordinated among tourist police units, maritime rescue teams and the embassy.

For local residents and businesses on Koh Samui, such cooperation means greater economic security, but it also raises concerns. Some residents worry about cultural impacts and rising housing costs if the foreign community expands rapidly. Local authorities said they will hold public forums and involve the community in planning to ensure sustainable development that does not harm natural resources or local ways of life.

Tourists can expect more Israel-friendly services, including food, communication and conveniences, as well as greater confidence in safety when traveling by boat or engaging in marine activities. At the same time, general tourists are likely to benefit from elevated service standards and improved emergency response networks, which are key factors in bringing visitors back and expanding a high-quality tourist base over the long term.

The ambassador’s visit to Surat Thani and the reaffirmation of cooperation on tourism and safety are positive signs for the recovery of the local tourism industry. Local authorities and Koh Samui communities must work together to put measures in place to avoid negative effects from growth while fully assessing economic and social benefits.
