Seaside music festival in Samui livens up, attracts tourists after low season and boosts local economy
Koh Samui came alive again last weekend after a seaside music festival featuring local performers and leading acts from Bangkok drew more than 5,000 Thai and international visitors. The event gave a major boost to hotels, restaurants, tour-boat operators and OTOP vendors on the island during the off-season.
Organized in partnership between the Koh Samui Tourism Business Association and a private event promoter, the festival used a medium-sized beach area with a professional stage and sound system. Performances ranged from chill and pop to electronic music, complemented by a fresh seafood food zone, a crafts market and cultural workshops. Organizers said they wanted to create a tourism experience that blends entertainment with local culture to extend the tourist season and spread visitors to different communities across the island.
A local entrepreneur who runs a beachfront restaurant said that during the dry or low season, revenue falls when visitor numbers drop. Events like this stimulate spending by both festival-goers and those who stay on to relax afterward, especially music lovers who often book accommodation for several nights in advance, improving cash flow for small lodging businesses. Temporary employment also increased in security, food and beverage services, and event management.
However, the event was not without challenges. Local environmental agencies raised concerns about impacts on the beach and marine ecosystems, particularly litter from attendees and prolonged use of the shoreline. Organizers pledged strict waste management measures, set up waste-sorting stations and cleanup teams after the event, established boundaries to protect nearby coral reefs, and implemented noise-control measures during specified hours to avoid disturbing nearby communities.
Positive spillovers were also evident in public-private cooperation. Local government organizations said the festival is an example of an activity that can promote the local economy if environmental management and safety are systematically planned. In the future, similar events may be held with expanded community activities and local product markets to distribute income more widely to grassroots communities.
Attendees commented on the friendly atmosphere and the combination of music and seaside beauty, which added a new dimension to their holiday; some said they would return as supporters of regional music events. Locals were divided between those pleased with increased income and those wary of environmental and traffic impacts. Organizers and relevant agencies therefore plan to hold community consultation sessions before expanding the event next year.
This seaside music festival on Koh Samui thus represents a positive sign of tourism recovery after the low season. If environmental and social impacts are managed appropriately, events like this could become an important tool for extending the tourist season, generating income for communities, and enhancing Koh Samui’s appeal as a destination beyond its beautiful beaches.
