Israeli Ambassador Visits Surat Thani to Boost Tourism Cooperation and Community Welfare on Koh Samui

Surat Thani — On August 13, 2026, Alona Fisher-Kamm, Israel’s ambassador to Thailand, visited Surat Thani province to meet local authorities and community representatives in the area and to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation on tourism, business, and public safety. The visit highlighted the growing Israeli community on Koh Samui and nearby areas.

During the visit she held meetings with the provincial governor, the Department of Tourism, tourist police, and other relevant agencies to exchange information on the movements and visitation trends of Israeli tourists, and on service issues such as language, culture, and crime-prevention measures. Tour operators and local businesses noted that signs of recovery in international tourism after the COVID-19 era make this cooperation necessary to build confidence in both safety and service quality.

The cooperation framework focuses on exchanging information on tourist safety, training frontline staff in tourist areas about Israeli language and culture, and establishing emergency communication mechanisms between the embassy and local agencies to assist residents or visitors in case of incidents. Local authorities stressed, however, that service regulation and tourism standards must align with local communities, including environmental management, marine resources, and residents’ livelihoods.

The impact on Koh Samui’s communities includes both benefits and challenges. On the positive side, tourism-driven income has risen, especially for restaurants, resorts, and tour services that cater to Israeli visitors’ specific needs, such as kosher food and guides fluent in Hebrew or English. At the same time, communities face pressure on housing, land prices, and cost of living that may rise with tourism expansion. The use of marine and beach resources also needs careful management to avoid harming the environment and local ways of life.

From the perspective of local entrepreneurs, the meeting created opportunities to develop niche tourism programs and diversify tourism products and services. The Israeli ambassador emphasized readiness to cooperate on promoting small investments, exchanging service skills, and training in public safety, proposing joint workshops between Thai and Israeli operators. Follow-up is expected through practical workshops and area-based cooperation in the coming quarter.

At the regional level, provincial officials said opening space for international cooperation is part of a local economic development policy that considers sustainability across tourism, trade, and security. Economic and social impact studies will be conducted before implementing in-depth projects to ensure no undue burden is placed on indigenous communities. This cooperation is therefore not only about promoting cross-border tourism but also an opportunity to establish shared resource-management frameworks between local communities and international stakeholders, so that Koh Samui’s growth can be balanced and sustainable.
