Coastal Safety and Environmental Measures on Koh Samui Following Tourist Growth

Koh Samui — Continuous growth in tourism from both domestic and international visitors in recent years has prompted local authorities to step up coastal safety measures, waste management, and marine resource conservation to balance economic development with environmental protection. The governor of Surat Thani province and relevant agencies have met to seek sustainable management approaches.

A primary issue raised is regulating marine activities, including better permitting for tour boats and water recreation to prevent disturbance to coral reefs and marine life. Measures discussed include enforcing boat speed limits in nearshore areas and designating no-entry zones to allow ecosystems to recover. Officials also proposed regular water-quality monitoring and ongoing assessment of tourism impacts to build a data foundation for policy planning.

Waste management is another major challenge, as waste volumes have risen with visitor numbers and collection systems have not kept pace with the amount and types of waste generated. Local agencies have launched campaigns to reduce single-use plastics and are promoting waste separation at key tourist sites. They are also piloting community recycling programs and creating recycling purchase points to stimulate a circular economy locally.

Public safety measures have been improved as well, such as strengthening marine rescue personnel, installing warning signs and first-aid kits at main beaches, and training tour operators in water-rescue techniques. Many communities are partnering with volunteer organizations to hold workshops on first aid and basic rescue skills to boost local emergency preparedness.

Impacts on residents and local businesses include both hope and concern. If environmental and safety measures are implemented earnestly, they can preserve tourist sites sustainably and protect natural resources that provide long-term income. In the short term, some operators may need to invest to upgrade services to meet new standards. Local authorities are therefore considering support measures, such as training assistance and working capital for small businesses.

Tourism and conservation experts say sustainable management requires cooperation among government, private sector, and communities, supported by scientific data for decision-making. Implementing sustainable measures will not only protect nature but also improve tourism quality and prolong the life of resources, ultimately benefiting the local economy and the quality of life for Koh Samui residents in the long run.
