5th Phitsanulok Short Film Festival, theme 'People-City-River', draws independent works nationwide

The 5th Phitsanulok Short Film Festival officially opened the evening of August 14, 2026, at a community cinema in the town center. This year’s main theme, “People–City–River,” focused on works reflecting relationships between people, local landscapes, and riverside ways of life along the Yom River. The theme attracted independent directors, film students, and artists from across the country; more than 120 submissions were received and, after selection, 30 films were chosen for the final screenings.

Organized by the Phitsanulok Independent Film Association in collaboration with the municipal government and local tourism agencies, the festival aims to promote Phitsanulok as a center for arts and film in the lower northern region. During the weeklong event there are short film screenings, academic panels, low-budget filmmaking workshops, and guided walks to filming locations in riverside communities. Organizers said this year’s festival emphasizes opening public spaces so that people can access art and communicate through film in an approachable way.

One of the most watched entries was a short by a local director portraying the lives of fishermen on the Yom River, combining documentary techniques with visual fiction. The film was praised for using the locality itself as a character and for reflecting issues of polluted water and economic changes affecting the community. Other filmmakers used the city of Phitsanulok as their backdrop to explore darker angles, such as cross-province labor and transformations of historic commercial districts. The diverse works offered fresh perspectives on a city that local audiences may recognize but have not often seen through the lens of cinema.

The festival also invited film critics and producers from Bangkok to review the entries, creating networking opportunities and industry access for emerging directors. This collaboration is viewed as an important channel to bring local works to national and international stages. A short film marketplace was also held, where creators pitched their films to producers and distributors with the aim of developing them into feature films or in-depth documentaries.

Local businesses reported positive effects: cafes, small hotels, and restaurants around the venue said customer numbers rose during the festival. Visitors from neighboring provinces and Bangkok came for screenings and workshops, giving local enterprises a chance to showcase their products and services. This reflects cultural-economy development that links tourism with local arts. Organizers hope the festival will become an art-tourism draw for the province and a platform for Phitsanulok’s creative community to grow.

The Phitsanulok Short Film Festival runs throughout the week, with the awards ceremony and closing screening scheduled for August 20. The jury—composed of directors, critics, and actors—will present awards in several categories, including Best Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Story. Interested parties can check the screening schedule and buy tickets on the festival’s website or at city ticket outlets. This year’s festival in Phitsanulok demonstrated the power of art to connect communities and the local economy, creating space for a new generation to tell the city’s stories through film.
