Fire at central Chiang Mai community fresh market damages 20 stalls; 5 treated with oxygen

On the morning of 19 August 2026 a fire broke out at a community fresh market in the Chiang Mai municipality, damaging about 20 shops. Firefighters rushed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading. Five people suffered minor injuries and were treated with oxygen at a nearby hospital; there were no fatalities. The Chiang Mai Municipality Disaster Prevention and Mitigation unit reported the fire began at about 06:40. Preliminary investigations indicate the cause was an electrical short circuit in a clothing stall where multiple outlets had been daisy-chained.

After the fire started, eight fire trucks from Chiang Mai Municipality and neighboring subdistrict municipalities with more than 40 personnel responded. They brought the fire under control in about an hour. A senior firefighter explained the market’s wooden-and-metal construction allowed the flames to spread quickly; crews had to use water to push back the wind-driven fire and withdraw at times for safety. Firefighters also established lines to prevent the blaze from reaching nearby food stalls and row buildings in the busy commercial morning district.

About 20 shops sustained varying degrees of damage: partial loss of goods to fire, damage to roof structures, and ruptured sections of the market’s water pipes. The market was temporarily closed for inspection and repairs. One vendor told reporters it was impossible to immediately estimate losses because many goods were water-damaged and heavily sooted. Several small-scale traders with limited capital expressed concern about the effect on their incomes and ability to recover.

The district hospital reported five patients were brought in with smoke inhalation and respiratory distress. Physicians treated them with oxygen and symptomatic medications; all patients’ conditions were stabilizing and they are expected to be discharged within one to two days. Meanwhile, the municipality deployed a mobile first-aid unit and coordinated with public health agencies to monitor for longer-term health effects from smoke inhalation, such as respiratory disease and irritation.

Municipal and police investigators are conducting a detailed probe, inspecting the electrical system, any unauthorized electrical connections, and compliance with market safety standards. The municipality has temporarily closed parts of the site to remove burned equipment and assess the market’s structural integrity. A complaints and assistance center has been set up to provide initial aid to affected vendors. Victims will be connected with the social welfare department to receive emergency financial assistance and benefits under municipal policy.

In the short term, the closure of the market affects the community and tourists, forcing shoppers to buy elsewhere while vendors lose income until the market reopens. Local authorities plan to support recovery with materials, financial counseling, and promotional activities to speed the recovery of small traders. The mayor issued a statement urging businesses to comply with electrical safety standards and install fire-protection equipment such as extinguishers and alarm systems to prevent future incidents.

Residents and local business networks are calling on relevant agencies to implement preventive measures, including regular electrical inspections of markets, training for shop owners and staff on fire prevention, and designing market layouts with clear escape routes. If sustained, these measures would reduce risk and restore confidence among vendors and visitors using the market in the future.
