Flash floods inundate low-lying areas of Chiang Rai after continuous heavy rain, hundreds evacuated

Continuous heavy rainfall in Chiang Rai province from the evening of 17 August through 19 August 2026 caused flash floods in several areas, particularly in Mae Lao, Mae Suai and Wiang Chai districts. Chiang Rai’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that over 300 households were affected by flooding and about 450 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters set up by volunteers and subdistrict administrative organizations (SAOs).

The flash floods originated from mountain ranges in the northern part of the province, with high accumulated rainfall driven by a monsoon trough crossing the upper northern region. Hydrological authorities issued warnings that water levels in many tributaries were likely to rise. Several highways and village access roads were temporarily cut off; small vehicles could not pass, forcing relief deliveries to rely on boats and large trucks.

Local rescue units, together with the military and provincial police, conducted evacuations of people in high-risk areas. Emergency assistance points were established and relief bags, ready-to-eat food, basic medicines and clean drinking water were provided to victims. Mobile medical teams carried out basic health checks and administered preventive vaccines against water-related communicable diseases—such as tuberculosis and conjunctivitis—to vulnerable groups including children and the elderly.

Beyond damage to homes and personal property, the flooding affected hundreds of rai of rice paddies and orchards that were approaching harvest. Longan farmers and some rice growers reported possible crop loss or reduced quality, raising short-term income concerns. Small community businesses in the affected tourist districts said customer numbers fell sharply during the crisis, reducing their revenue.

Chiang Rai provincial authorities ordered agencies to step up monitoring, install water pumps in high-risk areas, and instructed municipalities and SAOs to open additional shelters. The provincial natural resources and environment office, together with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, is surveying areas to assess long-term damage and plan recovery measures such as temporary flood barriers, repair of cut-off roads, and providing farmers with seed and production inputs.

Tourists planning to visit Chiang Rai at this time were advised by the provincial tourism office to follow warnings closely and avoid travel to affected areas, especially mountain routes and river crossings. Hotels and resorts in lowland areas have made emergency adjustments for guests, such as flexible check-in/check-out times and waiving cancellation fees, to ease visitors’ burdens. Authorities emphasized safety and urged visitors to follow local orders.

The province called on residents to be cautious, avoid crossing fast-flowing streams, report missing persons or hazardous spots, and prepare systematic damage reports so assistance can be targeted. Post-flood recovery will require funding from government agencies and cooperation from the private sector to help communities resume normal life quickly and limit prolonged economic impacts.
