Chinese Tourist Found Dead in Phuket Hotel Pool; Police Investigate Cause and Safety Measures

On August 17, a tragic incident occurred when a 44-year-old Chinese tourist was found unconscious in a hotel swimming pool in Phuket. Rescue workers and medical personnel immediately performed CPR and provided assistance at the scene, but the deceased, reported by name as Mr. Ye, was later pronounced dead. His family, who were staying with him, were cared for and interviewed by authorities to collect preliminary information.

Phuket police are urgently investigating the cause of death, collecting water samples from the pool, reviewing CCTV footage, and interviewing witnesses and hotel staff to reconstruct the incident. So far there are no signs of foul play. The body was sent to the hospital for further forensic examination in accordance with legal procedures; the autopsy will consider physical condition, medical history, and external factors that may have contributed to the death.

The incident has raised concerns about tourist safety in Phuket, which relies heavily on revenue from international visitors. Representatives from the hotel association and local tourism agencies said they will work with the provincial public health office to review pool safety standards, emergency life-saving systems (such as first-aid equipment, resuscitation devices, and staff training), and monitoring measures for guests who may experience health problems while swimming.

This case also highlights the importance of communicating with tourists about disclosing health histories and any limitations on pool use. Many hotels in Phuket have pool rules, such as prohibiting alcohol while swimming or special precautions for guests with pre-existing conditions, but enforcement and guest education still have gaps that can be improved. Having lifeguards or staff trained in first aid on duty at all times is another issue operators must consider strengthening.

In the short term, the incident may make some tourists more cautious, potentially affecting Phuket’s tourism image. Authorities expect that clear communication of safety measures and rigorous standards inspections can restore confidence quickly. Coordination between the Chinese embassy, insurers, and accommodation providers is important to assist the deceased’s family and handle necessary paperwork promptly.

The provincial public health office and the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket branch advise tourists to follow water-safety recommendations, such as avoiding swimming alone, not consuming alcohol before swimming, and informing staff of any health problems. For the local community and businesses, this incident is a reminder to upgrade preventive measures and maintain ongoing emergency preparedness to reduce risks and protect the lives of visitors and residents.
