Hua Hin Beachfront Development Project Upgrades Infrastructure, Builds New Viewpoints and Walkways

Hua Hin Municipality, in collaboration with the Phetchaburi Provincial Public Works and Town Planning Office, has launched a project to upgrade infrastructure along the Hua Hin beachfront to accommodate rising tourism. The plan covers construction of new walkways, drainage systems, viewing platforms, and landscaping of public areas. The project will be carried out in multiple phases and is expected to be completed within 18 months to reduce coastal erosion and improve safety for visitors and the local community.

The project was prompted by growth in Hua Hin’s tourism over recent years, which left some existing infrastructure worn and insufficient for the larger number of visitors. Coastal engineering teams studied the situation and proposed reinforcing coastal protection using natural materials, such as planting seaside groundcover and constructing flexible, low-impact breakwaters that have less environmental impact than traditional concrete structures.

Key components include widening the beachfront walkway and installing ramps for wheelchairs and bicycles to encourage walking and shared use by residents and tourists. New viewing platforms will be designed using eco-friendly materials, such as composite wood and natural stone, and energy-efficient LED public lighting will be installed to enhance the beach atmosphere at night and extend evening economic activity for beachfront businesses.

Economic impacts are expected to be positive. Hoteliers and restaurant operators anticipate benefits from increased tourist convenience for strolling along the shore. Damrong, a coffee shop owner in the Bluport area, said the new walkway and viewpoints will help distribute visitors across different areas, reduce congestion at certain spots, and create more commercial opportunities for small local businesses.

On community impacts, some fishermen and residents have expressed concerns that construction could disrupt livelihoods and fishing activities for a period. The municipality said it has prepared an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) management plan and compensation measures for the community, such as temporary boat parking, partial income compensation during construction, and ongoing public consultations to adjust plans in line with local needs.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the project includes training local operators in sustainable tourism services, covering waste management, beach maintenance, and providing tourist information in English and other major foreign languages. The municipality believes improving services will raise visitor satisfaction and enhance Hua Hin’s long-term image.

This Hua Hin beachfront improvement initiative is part of Phetchaburi Province’s coastal city development plan aimed at promoting conservation-minded, sustainable tourism. If implemented with community participation and strict environmental quality control, Hua Hin could become an example of a coastal tourist city that sustainably balances economic, social, and environmental interests.
