Local Stages Buzzing! Phitsanulok Music and Arts Fest Draws Tourists, Highlights Culture

A local music and arts festival held at the grounds of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat in Mueang district, Phitsanulok province last weekend drew lively crowds of visitors from the area and neighboring provinces. The event brought together local artists, indie musicians and contemporary folk performances to add cultural color and promote the province’s art-driven tourism economy. The festival was supported by local agencies, nonprofit organizations and regional tourism operators.

The atmosphere featured a main stage where local performers blended modern songs with traditional sounds—using instruments like the flute and pin (a Thai lute) alongside acoustic guitars—demonstrating efforts to link cultural roots with younger generations’ tastes. In addition to musical performances, the festival offered displays of local art, handicrafts and a photographic exhibition on the history of Phitsanulok, giving visitors a deeper sense of the local story.

Organizers said the primary aim was to create a platform for local artists to showcase their work and earn income while promoting sustainable tourism. Short workshops allowed attendees to try traditional crafts such as batik fabric making, building local versions of folk instruments, and demonstrations of regional cooking, making the event family-friendly and educational. Food booths featured Phitsanulok specialties like traditional boat noodles, khanom chin (fermented rice noodles), and local desserts.

The economic impact on small businesses was evident: restaurants and accommodation in the city saw occupancy rise about 60–80 percent during the festival. Souvenir vendors and small-scale artists sold substantial amounts of work. The provincial tourism office noted that events like this help disperse visitors away from major attractions and spread spending into community neighborhoods. Initial assessments showed most attendees were aged 20–45, an important target group for developing ongoing creative activities.

Out-of-province visitors said the festival offered a new perspective on Phitsanulok beyond historical sites such as Phra Ratcha Wang (the Moon Palace) and Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, praising local friendliness and the variety of activities. Many parents said the children’s workshops provided valuable out-of-classroom learning experiences. Local artists expressed encouragement from the audience turnout and art sales, which fostered exchanges of ideas and inspiration for future creative work.

Moving forward, organizers plan to connect with outlying communities and agritourism operators to host more events in rural areas—such as garden tours and hands-on craft workshops—hoping to further distribute tourists and income to those communities. Meanwhile, the provincial tourism office is considering making the festival an annual event to strengthen Phitsanulok’s image as a city of contemporary culture and local arts, providing an important boost to economic recovery after the low season for tourism.
