Isan Folk Music Festival Brings Together Young and Veteran Artists to Build a New Stage for Local Culture

Last weekend Khon Kaen province hosted an Isan folk music festival that gathered both emerging artists and veteran performers, aiming to promote and develop traditional music for the modern era. The event featured multiple stages with solo and ensemble molam performances, howd singing, demonstrations of traditional instruments, and workshops for children and youth. It attracted local residents, tourists, and musicians from several provinces across the Isan region.

A highlight of this year’s festival was a collaborative concert pairing veteran molam artists with new indie bands. The resulting performances blended the sound of the khaen with electronic rhythms in a well-balanced way. Organizers said the goal was not to undermine tradition but to open space for exchange and adaptation so that folk culture can stay alive and reach younger generations. In addition to performances, the festival held panel discussions on ways for folk artists to earn income, using digital media to distribute work, and sustainable management of cultural assets.

For local residents, the festival meant more than entertainment: it stimulated the local economy through sales of traditional food, handicrafts, and temporary lodging. Food vendors and small businesses reported clear increases in sales. This reflects the potential of local culture as a draw for tourists, provided activities are managed systematically and communities, government and private sectors cooperate.

The festival’s training and workshops for youth are a long-term investment. Molam teachers and local experts taught khaen playing, interactive molam singing, and traditional costume-making to children, many of whom said they would use these skills in local festivals and school events. That gives hope that Isan melodies and cultural knowledge will not fade with the times. The program also showed children that a livelihood as a folk artist is a real occupational option.

One byproduct of the event was connecting artists with organizers and tourism businesses, which could lead to performance opportunities nationally and abroad. Organizers signed memoranda of understanding with community tourism networks to promote cultural tourism packages for the next season. At the same time, the Fine Arts Department and local academic institutions offered support in knowledge and conservation to help set standards for the festival.

This year’s Isan folk music festival is therefore an example of adapting local culture to contemporary needs while preserving cultural roots, and at the same time embracing innovation and income-generation for communities. Clear outcomes included passing skills to youth, stimulating the local economy, and creating opportunities for folk artists to access larger stages. If future events maintain the same cross-sector cooperation, Isan culture is likely to grow alongside sustainable tourism.
