Tour Boat Capsizes Off Hua Hin; 12 Tourists Injured, Nearby Resorts Assist

On the morning of Sunday, August 30, 2026, a tourist boat capsized off Hua Hin Bay near the Hua Hin Beach lighthouse. Rescue teams, local authorities, and staff from nearby resorts mobilized to search for and assist tourists after receiving the report at 07:15. Twelve injured people were taken to Hua Hin Hospital, while one person was reported missing. A dive team and the provincial harbor patrol coordinated search efforts within a five-nautical-mile radius.

According to survivors, the electric submersible used for reef viewing suffered engine trouble mid-sea, leaving it adrift until winds and waves worsened, causing the vessel to list and take on water rapidly. Most passengers were Thai and foreign tourists on a half-day tour package. Hua Hin harbor officials said the boat sank in less than 20 minutes after the problem began.

Relevant agencies have opened an investigation focusing on the vessel’s condition, maintenance, operating permits, and crew competency. The president of the Hua Hin Tour Boat Association noted that during the minor monsoon season, wind and waves can change quickly; operators must strictly follow safety rules and equip vessels with complete lifesaving gear—such as properly fitting life jackets for every passenger, radios, and emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs).

The incident affects the local community and Hua Hin’s tourism both short- and long-term. In the short term, beachfront residents and small boat-tour businesses face heightened inspections by authorities, and operators with deficiencies may face temporary license suspensions. Resorts and restaurants reliant on marine tourists may be hit by safety concerns, causing a temporary drop in bookings.

In the long term, the incident is expected to accelerate measures to regulate and raise standards for tour boat services, such as routine vessel inspections, intensive crew training in prevention and emergency response, and comprehensive travel insurance covering marine emergencies. Local authorities have called a meeting of operators and maritime safety agencies this week to set joint measures.

The provincial governor has coordinated with Hua Hin Hospital to prepare for incoming casualties, while rescue teams continue searching for the missing person using boats and drones. The investigation findings and measures announced next week will be pivotal to tourist confidence in Hua Hin. The local tourism community must work together to restore its image and reaffirm safety so tourism can continue sustainably.
