Hua Hin Pier Improvement Project Accelerates Infrastructure Development to Accommodate More Tourists

Prachuap Khiri Khan province has announced it will move forward with a multi-hundred-million-baht project to upgrade Hua Hin’s pier and coastal systems, aiming to solve marine traffic problems, improve safety, and enhance services to support growth in maritime tourism. The project includes expanding the pier, improving coastal drainage systems, installing pile-mounted water-cleaning units, and creating walkways for visitors to connect with the commercial zones along the beach.

The plan states that the first phase will focus on repairing degraded berths and piles, as well as installing lighting and marine navigation signal systems to ensure safe entry and exit from the pier. An environmental impact assessment (EIA) will be conducted and the designs will align with coral reef and coastal conservation. The provincial chief administrative officer said this investment will help reduce the problem of boats overcrowding the shoreline, prevent coastal subsidence caused by substandard pier structures, and build confidence among maritime tourism operators.

Once completed, the project is expected to increase the pier’s capacity to accommodate medium- to large-sized vessels, enabling additional maritime routes linking nearby attractions such as islands near Hua Hin and the upper Gulf of Thailand. Improved connectivity will facilitate safer and more orderly marine activities, such as ferry services, diving tours, and waveboard sports, helping generate income for fishing communities and tourist boat operators.

Impacts on residents include both benefits and concerns. Positive effects include more jobs and income from an expanding tourism economy, including construction employment, service jobs, and related businesses. Concerns center on noise during construction and effects on local fishermen’s catches. The province has planned mitigation measures and will hold public consultations with residents to develop joint measures to reduce impacts, such as scheduling construction to avoid interfering with fishing activities and restoring aquatic habitats after work is finished.

There are also plans to establish waste and wastewater management systems to prevent marine pollution, in cooperation with private-sector agencies and local government organizations to train and educate tourism operators and communities on waste management, plastic reduction, and coastal care. Environmental experts say that if designed and implemented carefully, the project will help Hua Hin move toward sustainable tourism.

The Hua Hin pier improvement project is part of the province’s tourism development strategy, aiming to make Hua Hin a destination that can accommodate large numbers of visitors without damaging local resources. Communities and local agencies are invited to participate from the outset to balance economic development with environmental conservation. Success of the project could serve as a model for coastal infrastructure development in medium-sized Thai seaside tourist towns.
