Beach music festival at Bo Phut draws Thai and international artists; island bustling with tourists

Koh Samui came alive again last weekend with an international music festival on Bo Phut beach, drawing large numbers of Thai and foreign visitors. Performances included pop, indie and electronic acts, as well as local folk bands that blended traditional music with the seaside atmosphere, making the event a major draw of this year’s tourist season.

Organizers said they implemented strict safety and crowd-control measures, including managed entry and exit routes, emergency service points, and authorized food and beverage areas. They also enforced noise-reduction measures at night to avoid disturbing nearby communities. Workshops were held to involve local residents and tourism operators in selling OTOP products and regional cuisine, helping to spread tourism income to surrounding communities.

The positive economic effects on the local economy were clear. Many hotels and bungalows reported 100% occupancy, and beachside restaurants and bars recorded significant sales increases. Local tour operators were hired to provide shuttle services and post-concert activities such as island tours, night markets and outdoor art events, channeling tourist spending directly into the local community. Some visitors also took part in beach conservation activities organized alongside the festival, such as trash collection and educational sessions on protecting marine ecosystems.

However, some local residents voiced concerns about increased noise and traffic during the event, particularly those living near the concert area who requested clearer timing and location limits for activities. Organizers have listened and announced improvement plans for next time, such as adjusting concert end times, increasing parking and public transport options, and deploying sound-management teams to limit impacts on nearby homes.

The tourism authority sees an opportunity to expand the festival into an annual event that attracts higher-quality visitors by linking it to cultural and eco-tourism activities, so it won’t be just a one-off entertainment event but a tool to stimulate the economy and provide regional stages for local artists. Small businesses agreed that a clear events calendar would help them better plan for visitors and distribute income more sustainably.

For tourists, the festival offered not only quality musical performances but also chances to discover local activities and Samui’s regional flavors. Many said the seaside concert atmosphere made their trip more memorable than a typical beach holiday. Organizers aim to develop varied, community-friendly themes to balance entertainment with preserving quality of life on the island.
