Man Armed with Knife Injures Himself at School in Samui; Arrested After Drinking 'Pork Blood' Liquor
On the afternoon of August 31, 2026, officers at Koh Samui Police Station were notified of a man acting erratically with a knife on the grounds of a school in Mae Nam subdistrict. Police responded to the scene with rescue teams and municipal officers and found a young man standing with a knife and appearing unstable. After about 20 minutes of negotiation, officers persuaded him to drop the weapon and took him into custody without additional injuries to students or teachers.
The suspect, identified as Somchai (alias), about 28 years old, was taken to Koh Samui Police Station for legal proceedings. Preliminary police inquiries indicated that the violent behavior stemmed from alcohol consumption; that night he had also drunk a dark-colored liquid he claimed was “pork blood” mixed with beer before arriving at the school. Local sources said the suspect had a history of drug use and intermittent mental illness but had not previously committed violent acts in public.
Teachers and students at the school said they were shocked because the incident occurred just after classes ended and several students were passing through the schoolyard. School administrators said they have increased emergency security measures after the incident, such as installing additional CCTV cameras and deploying security personnel during high student traffic times. They also provided psychological counseling to teachers and students affected by the event.
Police said they will press charges against Somchai for carrying a knife in public and may add further charges if they find evidence he threatened or tried to harm others. Authorities will also coordinate with local public health agencies to evaluate the suspect’s mental state and behavior to determine whether treatment is needed. Some parents called on authorities to urgently investigate youth access to alcoholic beverages and access to materials that could be hazardous to the public.
The incident alarmed the community and tourists on Koh Samui, which is usually known for its peacefulness. Some tourism operators warned that such reports could damage the island’s reputation if amplified in the media. Fortunately, the situation did not escalate into a serious incident, and most residents praised the police for quickly controlling the situation. Community leaders called for strengthened surveillance systems and expanded mental health support for residents to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
