Samui Food and Culture Festival Revives After Low Season, Attracts Thai and International Tourists

Koh Samui held its annual food and culture festival in late August to welcome the coming high season. The event featured local music performances, a traditional cooking competition, and a local marketplace that encouraged small vendors to set up booths. Local chefs and guest chefs from Phuket and Bangkok demonstrated dishes using freshly caught seafood from around the island, such as sour curry with fermented fish innards (gaeng som tai pla) and grilled reef fish served with traditional dipping sauces.

Organizers said the goal is to stimulate Samui’s grassroots economy after the low season, when tourism-dependent communities have felt a drop in bookings. According to the island’s tourism operators’ association, hotels, restaurants, and local authorities collaborated to promote packages that bundle accommodation with festival admission and cultural activities, giving visitors options for both short and extended stays. The effort also increased income for street vendors, market sellers, and local fishermen.

Visiting foreign tourists generally appreciated the gathering of local culture and the uncomplicated, authentic flavors. European and East Asian visitors said that learning local cooking methods and engaging directly with residents made their travel experience more meaningful. The festival also offered workshops—such as coconut leaf weaving and basic Muay Thai classes—that attracted couples and families.

Positive impacts on the community were evident. Roadside eateries and market vendors reported higher sales and greater recognition for local products. Many participants used the opportunity to expand sales channels via social media and to connect with travel agencies interested in cultural tourism. A small community fund was also established to improve necessary infrastructure—such as public restrooms and temporary parking—to handle the influx of visitors during the event.

However, organizers acknowledged challenges with waste management and keeping beaches clean. The municipal office and volunteers set up waste-sorting stations and campaigned for attendees to use environmentally friendly containers, and increased garbage truck collections on weekends. Local conservationists assessed the festival as a potential model for sustainable cultural tourism, provided environmental measures are maintained alongside continued income generation for residents.

This year’s Samui Food and Culture Festival has become a sign of recovery for the local tourism industry after a challenging period caused by the low season and changing traveler behavior. Organizers hope to continue the festival next year and expand learning-focused activities and cultural heritage offerings to attract visitors seeking deeper experiences beyond simply beach relaxation.
