Tour Bus Crashes into Utility Pole in Chiang Rai City, 18 Injured Including Foreign Tourists

A passenger tour bus crashed into a utility pole in the Chiang Rai municipality this morning
17 June 2026) at 06:20. Rescue teams and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene on a main road near a community intersection and found a white 45-seat private company coach that had suffered brake failure before plowing into a roadside utility pole. The front of the bus was heavily damaged and several passengers were injured. Initial reports indicate 18 people were hurt: 14 with minor to moderate injuries and four critically injured. Victims were taken to Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital and nearby private hospitals.

The incident happened during rush hour. Passengers included local residents and foreign tourists who had traveled from nearby provinces to catch flights at Chiang Rai Airport. A source from the Chiang Rai highway police said some passengers were a small group of students on a field trip. Witnesses said the bus was traveling at a normal speed before veering left and striking the utility pole with force, shattering windows and crumpling the roof. Passengers were stunned and several were thrown from their seats.

Police conducted a preliminary alcohol test on the driver and found no drugs in his system, but the investigation is continuing to determine the exact cause of the loss of control. Another witness said the driver tried to regain control but failed due to speed and a slight curve in the road at that location. Authorities will inspect the brakes, signal lights, and road condition factors such as drainage grooves and slipperiness from dew or oil stains. The bus company and the person responsible for the vehicle’s safety will also be called in for questioning.

The impact on Chiang Rai residents and tourists was immediate: traffic at the intersection was reduced to allow rescue teams to work, causing widespread congestion, especially during the morning rush when students and employees commute. The incident has also raised concerns among local tourism operators because tour buses are a primary means of transporting visitors between key attractions in the province. Repeated incidents could erode confidence and lead tourists to change routes or cancel trips.

Hospital officials said the critically injured include people with broken bones and serious wounds; some require transfer for emergency surgery. Medical teams are providing treatment and closely monitoring patients. Relatives and those waiting to pick up victims have received initial psychological counseling from the hospital’s emergency psychiatry unit. For immediate compensation, the tour operator has coordinated with the Chiang Rai Provincial Land Transport Office to cover medical expenses and assist the families of the injured.

Police are collecting evidence and will review footage from local CCTV to verify driving behavior and actions before the crash. They will also check the driver’s training records and recent rest periods. The provincial authorities plan to convene relevant agencies to review public passenger safety measures, particularly controls on driving hours, pre-trip vehicle inspections, and the installation of additional safety equipment such as seat belts for each seat and rear-collision warning systems, to prevent repeat incidents and restore confidence among residents and visitors to Chiang Rai.
