Phuket Studies Widening Island’s Main Access Road to Ease Congestion, Accommodate More Tourists

PHUKET — Phuket province is considering widening a main road that serves as a gateway to the island after traffic congestion during festivals and the high season has steadily increased. Local officials and relevant agencies are studying road infrastructure improvement plans to relieve overcrowding and improve connections between the Phuket bridge, the city center, and popular tourist areas.

The proposals under consideration include several approaches: widening traffic lanes, upgrading entrance and exit links, installing intelligent traffic signals, and designing pull-off and circulation points for trucks and public transport. The provincial engineering office has joined the Department of Highways and urban planning agencies in conducting on-site surveys to assess environmental, landscape, and roadside community impacts.

The Phuket governor said the road expansion review is not only about adding pavement width but also about designing a logistics system for faster traffic flow, providing appropriate parking, and promoting public transport to ensure long-term sustainability. The tourism sector hopes such infrastructure investment will help preserve a smooth travel experience for both international and domestic visitors.

For residents, the road expansion could raise concerns about land expropriation, construction dust and emissions, and changes to the roadside community environment. The province said it will hold public hearings for residents and affected businesses to adjust plans and reduce negative impacts, with temporary measures including dust control, scheduled hours for heavy machinery, and initial compensation for those affected.

From the tourism business perspective, travel convenience is a key factor in investment decisions. Many hotel and resort operators said that if the road and traffic systems are improved, tourist confidence would increase and off-season bookings might be stimulated. However, construction and management costs will need to be calculated carefully to avoid driving up service fees and accommodation prices.

The road widening plan is also linked to the province’s longer-term development projects, such as creating a public transport network connecting main beaches, piers, and the airport to meet future travel demand. The province expects to complete feasibility studies and solicit input from relevant agencies before presenting a final plan to the cabinet and funding partners. The final decision will have to consider environmental impacts, cost-effectiveness, and community acceptance to ensure the investment benefits Phuket residents and visitors to the greatest extent.
