Pattaya police rush probe after 17-year-old's body found in bag near railway; suspect believed to be foreign national

On 26 June 2016, officers from Pattaya City Police Station were notified of the discovery of the body of a 17-year-old girl inside a suitcase abandoned near railway tracks on the outskirts of Pattaya. The early-morning discovery alarmed local residents and tourists passing through the area. Reporters who visited the scene found it in a small side-soi connecting to a main road in a densely populated neighborhood. Forensic teams collected evidence at the scene and sent the body to Pattaya City Hospital for a detailed post-mortem to determine the cause of death.

Preliminary autopsy results indicated the deceased had no identification documents and bore some wounds, but the exact cause of death could not yet be determined. Authorities are awaiting further forensic findings, including time and contributing factors surrounding the death. Police said they had obtained important leads from nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and had requested footage from relevant agencies to trace the perpetrator.

Officers later uncovered leads linking a suspect believed to be a foreign national. Reports said a good Samaritan informed police that a foreign tourist was seen leaving the area for the airport before the body was discovered. Immigration and tourist police have coordinated to track the man. Sources say investigators are checking whether he had any involvement with the deceased, and if sufficient evidence is found an arrest warrant will be issued immediately.

The incident has raised concerns among residents and tourism operators in Pattaya. Guesthouse and small accommodation owners in the vicinity warned the case could harm the image of a tourist city that has only recently been recovering after reopening to visitors. Some locals are urging authorities to increase patrols and install CCTV at vulnerable spots to improve safety for both residents and tourists.

Local security agencies stressed that members of the public and visitors with information can report tips 24 hours a day. The regional Tourist Police Command, together with the local Immigration Office, is urgently checking entries and exits of the suspect to verify his background and any links to the case. Police have asked hotel and guesthouse operators to keep records of guests’ stays and to demand identification from customers as evidence for the investigation.

Regarding further investigative steps, authorities said they will hold a press briefing when clear evidence is available. The case remains under active investigation as forensic evidence is compiled, CCTV footage analyzed, witnesses interviewed, and the backgrounds of potential suspects examined. Residents of Pattaya and tourism businesses are closely watching developments and hope the inquiry will be resolved quickly to restore peace and confidence in this important tourist city.
