Hua Hin Municipality Installs 20 EV Charging Stations to Boost Tourism and Cut Pollution

Hua Hin Municipality has announced a plan to install 20 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the town by the third quarter of this year. The project is jointly funded by public and private sectors and aims to serve tourists who drive EVs while supporting the transition to clean energy. The stations will cover key areas such as the night market, Hua Hin railway station, beachfront areas, and major shopping districts.

Under the plan, each site will host a number of DC fast chargers to accommodate passenger cars and AC chargers for smaller electric vehicles. The system will include app-based payment integrated with in-car navigation. Installation goes beyond adding infrastructure: it also involves reconfiguring parking layouts, installing clear signage, and training municipal staff and local officers to maintain the system.

The mayor of Hua Hin said the project responds to growing demand from residents and tourists for EV charging, which helps reduce air and noise pollution—especially in crowded tourist zones. The municipality is partnering with hotel and resort operators to pilot charging services for guests. There are also plans to promote electric vehicles for local for-hire transport, such as the blue-red songthaews and motorcycle taxis, to create a more environmentally friendly public transport system.

Installing charging stations will prepare Hua Hin to welcome more eco-tourists and environmentally conscious travelers. Local business owners and tourism operators generally view the project positively, saying it will expand the customer base and improve competitiveness. Concerns remain over upfront installation and maintenance costs. The municipality said it will solicit private-sector proposals under public–private partnership (PPP) arrangements to ease budgetary pressures and will survey actual demand before adding more charging points.

Environmentalists and local communities see the project as an important step in reducing pollution, particularly during peak tourism periods when traffic volumes are high. They urge complementary policies such as promoting electric public transport, creating low-emission zones, and establishing local renewable energy infrastructure—for example, installing solar panels on parking lot roofs to power the charging stations.

The EV charging-station rollout is part of Hua Hin’s strategic urban development plan that emphasizes sustainability alongside economic development. The municipality plans to monitor usage periodically and hold public hearings after installation to improve services. If successful, Hua Hin could become a model mid-sized tourist city that integrates clean energy and technology to align with modern tourism trends.
