Local man on motorcycle hits pedestrian in front of Koh Samui; victim critically injured, rescue teams rush to help

On Thursday morning, July 1, 2026, at approximately 07:30, officers from Koh Samui Police Station and local rescue and ambulance teams were notified of a motorcycle striking a pedestrian on Sukhumvit Road in front of a community near the fishing pier in Koh Samui district, Surat Thani province. The injured person was taken to Koh Samui Hospital in critical condition.

At the scene, responders found a popular-brand motorcycle overturned at the roadside with heavy damage to its front end. Nearby lay an injured Thai man, about 60 years old, who was given first aid by rescue personnel before being transported by ambulance to Koh Samui Hospital. Doctors later reported the man had head and chest injuries and was in shock but still had a pulse; he remains under close observation and treatment.

Witnesses at the scene told officials that traffic at the location is congested in the mornings as cars and motorcycles travel to the market and pier. The victim attempted to cross the road at an inopportune moment and was struck by a motorcycle traveling at speed. The motorcycle rider, a local man about 28 years old, waited to give a statement to police and said he tried to brake but could not avoid the collision.

Police conducted an alcohol test on the motorcycle rider; preliminary results showed no drug use or alcohol above the legal limit. Officers documented the scene, collected evidence, and are interviewing additional witnesses, as well as checking nearby CCTV to evaluate the rider’s speed and behavior at the time of the crash.

The incident highlights traffic and road safety problems in Koh Samui’s community areas, where local vehicles and tourists mix. Parts of Sukhumvit Road still lack pedestrian-friendly design features such as clear crosswalks, pedestrian signals, sidewalks, and speed-calming measures in densely populated spots.

Community leaders and local authorities who inspected the scene urged responsible agencies to consider installing warning signals, improving road surfaces and crosswalks, and launching road-safety campaigns with schools and local businesses to educate residents and visitors. Police also warned drivers to slow down and be more cautious when passing through community areas.

The warning extends to tourists who may be unfamiliar with traffic conditions on Koh Samui; during peak season traffic increases and accident risk rises. Residents and visitors should follow traffic laws, use designated crossings, and wear helmets when riding motorcycles to help protect the local community and the island’s tourism.

The case is under investigation by Koh Samui Police Station, and additional witness interviews will be conducted. If criminal negligence or other offenses are found, authorities will pursue legal action. Members of the public with further information are asked to contact the local police station.
