Chiang Rai Prepares for Clean Energy Trend, to Build Local Renewable Energy Demonstration Center

On July 5, 2026, the government announced measures to rapidly expand clean energy nationwide to strengthen energy security and support economic growth. That trend is affecting Chiang Rai, which is reviewing provincial energy infrastructure development plans. Local agencies, private sector partners and academic institutions have discussed establishing a renewable energy demonstration center to serve as a knowledge hub and to translate national policy into practices that fit local conditions.

Chiang Rai has strong potential for renewable energy from solar, biomass and small-scale hydropower. Many communities in Huai Nam Khun and agriculture-based districts can convert agricultural residues into biomass energy. The provincial energy office says preliminary development will focus on community-scale projects, such as rooftop solar systems for schools and communities, biogas production from livestock waste by community enterprises, and small hydropower systems that have limited ecological impact.

The demonstration center, currently being designed, will be located near Chiang Rai town to serve as a learning site for students, farmers and small entrepreneurs. The site will feature demonstration solar panels, battery-based energy storage test systems, biogas units using organic waste, and integrated energy-management solutions so visitors can see how community-level energy systems connect. Experts from Mae Fah Luang University and local physical education institutes will provide technical advice and training curricula.

As for expected benefits, Mr. Sombat, a community enterprise representative and local leader in Wiang Pa Pao district, said clean energy projects will genuinely reduce household energy costs, especially for farmers who use electricity for pumping water and processing crops. If communities can produce their own energy, they will rely less on the main grid and gain resilience during crises. The projects will also create opportunities for local energy-service businesses, such as solar panel and battery installation and maintenance, providing income for people in the area.

Regarding impacts on tourists visiting Chiang Rai, some hotels and homestays have begun investing in solar and energy-management systems to meet demand from environmentally conscious guests. One operator in Chiang Rai town said showing environmental friendliness helps attract tourists from Europe and Australia who prioritize lowering their carbon footprints. At the same time, renewable energy helps reduce electricity bills, allowing small operators to keep service prices stable amid volatile global energy costs.

The Chiang Rai governor has called for coordination between national and local agencies so clean-energy investments align with provincial development plans and do not burden communities. He emphasized the need to protect the environment and ensure community participation at every stage, including allocating budgets for training and building capacity among local technicians who will maintain systems long term. The pilot projects and demonstration center are expected to begin construction in the fourth quarter of this year if budget approval and land allocation from relevant agencies are secured. Ecological and economic development from clean energy could position Chiang Rai as a regional model for transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
