Jomtien Beach's Persistent Trash Problem Draws Complaints from Tourists, Community Raises Environmental Concerns

Jomtien Beach in Pattaya is a popular destination for both Thai and international visitors, known for its long stretch of sand and a calmer atmosphere than Pattaya’s main beach. However, accumulating trash along the shoreline and in public areas has become an increasingly criticized issue among tourists and local residents. Beachfront restaurant operators and many visitors report finding large amounts of plastic waste, water bottles, and food packaging, especially after events or weekend festivals.

A local newspaper reader, Mark Pearson, submitted a complaint to the news office to highlight the ongoing problem. He said that although Pattaya City Municipality conducts regular trash collection, the volume of waste flowing in from neighboring communities and littering by tourists continues to rise. He also noted that source separation of waste remains disorganized, limiting effective waste management and recycling.

Local authorities say they have increased the frequency of beach cleanings, added more trash bins, and organized beach-cleanup campaigns with the community and businesses. They acknowledge, however, that solving the problem requires continuous cooperation from residents and tourists. Officials suggested additional measures including installing awareness signage, increasing penalties for improper disposal, and expanding community-level waste separation programs to prevent trash from reaching the beach.

The impact of beach litter not only spoils the scenery and reduces the area’s appeal to visitors but also directly harms the marine ecosystem. Marine animals can be injured by trapped plastics; some litter makes the sand unclean and reduces safety for swimming. A poor image may also undermine long-term tourist confidence and hurt local businesses’ income.

Local operators—such as restaurants, resorts, and environmental volunteer groups—recommend integrated measures between the municipality, businesses, and community. Suggestions include designated disposal points for recyclable materials, creating controlled zones for events that generate waste, and training tourism employees on waste reduction. There are also initiatives to use technology to monitor waste volumes and improve collection efficiency.

In the long term, addressing Jomtien Beach’s trash problem requires both government policy and participation from all stakeholders. Building a culture of responsible tourism and an effective waste management system would help restore the beach’s image and preserve marine resources sustainably, benefiting the local economy and the quality of life for Pattaya residents.
