Tugboat Strikes Submerged Rocks off Samui; No Serious Injuries but Vessel Partially Sinks
Koh Samui — On Thursday morning a medium-sized tugboat carrying tourists struck submerged rocks off the island’s west coast, causing the vessel to capsize and partially sink. Fortunately there were no serious injuries, but the incident has raised concerns among local fishermen and tourism operators because the area is a regular route for sightseeing boats and small passenger vessels.
Koh Samui police received the report at about 06:30 that a tugboat carrying several tourists had collided with an underwater rock near the shoreline. Marine rescue teams and related agencies, including the subdistrict administrative organization and port officials, arrived at the scene with patrol vessels and found 12 passengers aboard. Everyone was able to swim to shore or was rescued onto other boats in time. Most passengers were foreign tourists and Thais; no one sustained serious injuries. Authorities brought the passengers ashore for medical checks and to record the incident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that wave action combined with a sudden change in currents during the morning were key factors that caused the boat to lose control and be pushed onto the submerged rocks. Navigating through channels with unclear aids to navigation in some stretches further increased the risk of a worse outcome. Boat operators and the local tourism association said warning signs on the water should be improved and that captains need more training in marine navigation under changing weather conditions.
The loss of the vessel and damage to property also has economic consequences for the boat owner and crew who rely mainly on tourism income. The owner of the damaged boat said repairs and salvage will take time and money and may disrupt service schedules during the peak season, affecting crew wages and local ticket vendors. Tourists who had planned coastal trips that day had to change or cancel their itineraries.
Authorities said they will expedite a survey of the shoreline to install additional warning signs and navigation aids. The local port office is coordinating with boat associations and fishing communities to define safer navigation routes. There will also be a campaign urging operators to adopt safety standards such as pre-departure vessel checks, providing sufficient flotation devices, and limiting passenger numbers to each vessel’s capacity to prevent similar incidents.
Officials advise visitors to Koh Samui to check safety information and marine condition advisories before setting out—especially when wave and wind conditions are changing—and to choose operators with clear safety standards. Although there were no fatalities in this incident, it serves as an important warning about the need to improve maritime safety management on Koh Samui. Systematic measures would help protect lives, property, and long-term confidence in the island’s tourism.
