Samui Beach Music Festival Draws Tourists, Boosts Low-Season Income

A beach music festival on Koh Samui held over the past weekend drew large numbers of Thai and international visitors to the area despite being the low season. Organizers and local businesses said the event helped stimulate the micro-economy and mitigate the impact of lower tourist numbers since the peak season.

Positioned as a mixed acoustic and electronic music festival held on a central beach, the event was promoted online and through overseas travel agencies. Local artists and independent musicians from Bangkok and across Asia performed in several acts. Rather than focusing on high ticket prices, the festival emphasized travel experiences linked to local life, such as regional cuisine, cultural performances, and community craft stalls.

Small hoteliers and restaurants in the area reported occupancy increases of 60–80% during the festival, while beach food and beverage vendors saw noticeably stronger sales. Patama, a small bungalow operator in the neighborhood, said events like this help sustain her business during normally slow periods and provide opportunities for the local community to showcase handicrafts and earn supplementary income.

However, the festival faced challenges. Samui city officials and organizers had to coordinate on safety, waste management, and traffic measures because some roads around the beach became congested. Organizers provided shuttle services and added paid parking points to alleviate problems. Local conservation groups also expressed concern about beach use and the potential impacts on coastal ecosystems if waste management and noise control were not strictly enforced.

Organizers said this year’s festival implemented environmental measures in partnership with the community, such as waste separation at food stalls, bans on certain single-use plastics in some areas, installation of recycling points, and volunteer beach cleanup teams after the event to restore the site quickly. Provincial tourism officials announced they would apply lessons learned from the festival to improve future planning, aiming to balance tourism promotion with conservation of local resources.

The music festival reflects a new approach on Koh Samui to attract niche tourists seeking quality experiences rather than sheer numbers, according to tourism leaders who want to raise per-visitor revenue. Local businesses and the community also view cultural events like this as helping to reshape the island’s image—not just as a destination for beaches and parties but as a hub for creative activity—which can help distribute income more widely within the community.
