Samui Prepares for Summer Tourist Season, Backing Local Energy Plans and Border Connectivity

As Thailand prepares to welcome tourists for the summer season, Koh Samui — a major destination for both domestic and international visitors — has begun measures to accommodate the recovery of tourism and local development. Local agencies, businesses and communities are coordinating to handle the expected rise in visitors and to improve basic infrastructure.

Local authorities report that from the start of the year through 4 July 2026, Surat Thani Province has received tens of thousands of foreign tourists, and officials expect the return of Chinese and European visitors during school holidays will support occupancy rates on Koh Samui. However, operators still face multiple challenges, including rising energy costs and the need for infrastructure investment to cope with larger tourist numbers. These concerns align with the national push for clean energy policies and reduced dependence on energy imports.

On local energy matters, renewable energy industry groups and private-sector players in the area have recommended that Samui and neighboring zones consider long-term plans supporting higher biodiesel blends (E20) and other alternative energies to help lower fuel costs and increase resilience in the tourism supply chain. The municipality and local energy agencies are negotiating with energy providers and hotels to develop rooftop solar systems and battery storage for peak periods, which are expected to reduce electricity bills and provide backup power during times of high demand.

Regional cooperation between Thailand and neighboring countries — particularly efforts to accelerate cross-border transport links promoted by the government, such as the Sadao–Bukit Kayu Hitam connection in the south — could have indirect effects on Koh Samui by increasing overland travel and regional trade. That may attract tourists from Malaysia and boost demand for tourism services. Such connectivity, however, requires careful consideration of resource management, security and customs procedures to ensure benefits are fairly distributed to local communities.

Island residents who rely on tourism income express hope that the return of visitors will ease economic hardship, while also voicing concerns about potential environmental and infrastructure impacts. Local communities and civil society organizations therefore call for development policies grounded in sustainable tourism principles. Proposed measures include controlling visitor density in key areas, promoting renewable energy adoption in hotels, and training tourism operators in service standards and environmental management.

Overall, Koh Samui is in transition — recovering from the impacts of COVID and moving toward a more sustainable tourism model. Collaboration among government agencies, the private sector and communities will be crucial to not only revive the island’s economy but also preserve its natural resources and local way of life for the long term.
